About this file
This is a Performance Work Statement (PWS) Section 21 13 00 for the rehabilitation of the Eielson Visitor Center fire suppression sprinkler system at Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska.
The contractor must design, select, install, and test a hydraulic calculated wet pipe fire suppression sprinkler system protecting all spaces unless specifically exempted under NFPA 13 (2022). The building is classified as educational/museum occupancy for light hazard purposes. The system will be fed from an existing nominal 2,500-gallon pressure tank in accordance with NFPA 22 chapter 7. Materials must include UL or FM listed schedule 40 black steel piping with threaded, welded, grooved, or rolled joint fittings (thin-walled piping prohibited); sprinklers matching existing type, orientation, response, K-factor, and color; swing-type check valves with elastomer seals; OS&Y isolation valves; tamper switches on isolation valves; and UL 2901 listed pre-mixed antifreeze solution with a freezing point less than -28°F. Seismic protection calculations require a CP value of 0.8369 based on an SDS of 1.11. Installation requirements include concealing piping above ceilings, centering pendant heads in ceiling tiles, providing wire guards in vulnerable areas, and protecting ceiling penetrations from seismic damage with oversize escutcheons or arm-over length allowing one-inch movement. The contractor must employ either a licensed fire protection engineer or NICET Level III Technician for system design and maintain NICET Level II certification for supervisory personnel. Testing must occur per NFPA 13 in the presence of Owner's designated personnel, followed by completion of the NFPA "Contractor's Material and Test Certificate." Training must be provided to Owner's personnel on system operation, maintenance, control valve location, and fire alarm interface, with delivery of as-builts, care and maintenance instructions, and NFPA 25 standards.

1.4 SYSTEM DESIGN
A. Design, provide, and install a sprinkler system protecting all spaces unless those spaces are specifically exempted from protection by NFPA 13 (2022).
Design Alaska, Inc. 21 13 00- 3
B. Building occupancy is educational/museum as defined by NFPA 13 (2022) section A.4.3.
C. Unless otherwise indicated, provide a hydraulic calculated wet pipe system for light hazard occupancy. Hydraulic remote areas are permitted to be reduced within the parameters indicated in NFPA 13 (2022) section 19.3.3.2.3 if quick-response sprinklers are utilized.
D. Fire suppression system as-built drawings from March 2008 are available for use in hydraulic design calculations.
E. Existing fire suppression system is fed from a nominal 2,500 gallon pressure tank in accordance with NFPA 22 chapter 7. See notes indicated on Drawings and fire suppression system as-built drawings for capacity and demand utilized for original system design.
F. System residual pressure requirements at design flow rate shall not exceed 90 percent of residual pressure available at design flow rate.
G. Locate sprinkler accessories where indicated on drawings.
H. Seismic protection shall be in accordance with NFPA 13 Chapter 18. Horizontal seismic force shall be calculated as FPW = CP x WP, where CP = 0.754 x SDS per NFPA 13 section
18.5.9.3. The SDS for this structure is 1.11, resulting in a CP of 0.8369 for use in seismic protection design.
I. Fire suppression Drawings are conceptual, representing system design intentions. When Drawings conflict with referenced standards provide protection and an installation complying with referenced standards. Coordinate the installation of the fire suppression system with the work of other building trades and site conditions.
J. Floor plans and building sections are shown to relay relative space layout, floor to floor heights, and ceiling heights and type only. Field verify existing conditions and provide a sprinkler system design and installation to match.
