About this file
This is a technical specification section for metal fabrications work on the Rehabilitation of the Eielson Visitor Center at Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska, prepared by Design Alaska, Inc.
The specification covers miscellaneous framing and supports, shelf angles, and related metal products furnished but not installed, including loose steel lintels, steel weld plates and angles for concrete casting, anchor bolts, steel pipe sleeves, and various inserts. Required submittals include product data for fasteners and shop primers, shop drawings showing fabrication and installation details for miscellaneous framing and shelf angles, mill certificates for stainless steel compliance, welding certificates, and paint compatibility certificates. Quality assurance requirements mandate welding qualifications per AWS D1.1/D1.1M (Steel), AWS D1.2/D1.2M (Aluminum), and AWS D1.6/D1.6M (Stainless Steel). Materials specified include ASTM A36 steel plates and shapes, ASTM A500 cold-formed steel tubing, ASTM A53 steel pipe, ASTM B209 aluminum plate (Alloy 6061-T6), and ASTM B221 aluminum extrusions (Alloy 6063-T6). Fasteners include Type 304 stainless steel for exterior use, ASTM A307 Grade A bolts, ASTM F3125/F3125M Grade A325 high-strength bolts, and ASTM F1554 Grade 36 anchor bolts with appropriate galvanizing and coating requirements. Shop primers must comply with painting sections and be compatible with topcoats, with options including universal modified-alkyd primer (MPI#79), water-based primer (MPI#107), and epoxy zinc-rich primer (MPI#20).
Fabrication requirements emphasize shop assembly to the greatest extent possible with preassembly and clear marking for field reassembly, clean cutting and drilling with edges eased to 1/32-inch radius, continuous welding at corners and seams to minimize distortion, and exposed connections formed as hairline joints using concealed fasteners or welds where feasible. Field installation must verify actual locations through measurements before fabrication, set metal fabrications accurately in location and elevation with level, plumb surfaces, weld field connections that cannot be shop-welded, and provide temporary bracing for items built into concrete or masonry. Finishing requirements include hot-dip galvanizing per ASTM A153/A153M and ASTM A123/A123M for indicated items, surface preparation per SSPC-SP 6/NACE No. 3 (Commercial Blast Cleaning) for exterior items and those receiving zinc-rich primer, and shop priming with universal shop primer or zinc-rich primer as indicated, applied per SSPC-PA 1 with stripe painting at corners, crevices, bolts, and welds. Post-installation repair work includes touchup painting of field welds and abraded areas with minimum 2.0-mil dry film thickness and galvanizing repair per ASTM A780/A780M for galvanized surfaces.
