About this file
This is a Selective Demolition specification section (06 20 00 / 02 41 19) for the Rehabilitation of the Eielson Visitor Center at Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska, prepared by Design Alaska, Inc.
The specification establishes requirements for selective demolition and removal of designated building portions and site elements, including salvage operations for items to be reused or recycled. The contractor assumes ownership of demolition waste unless otherwise indicated. Key definitions distinguish between "demo" (detach and dispose), "remove and reinstall" (detach, prepare, and reinstall without damage), "existing to remain" (items left in place), and "dismantle" (gentle removal methods to prevent damage). Required informational submittals include: engineering survey of building condition; proposed protection measures report with drawings showing barriers and controls for dust, noise, and environmental protection; detailed schedule of demolition activities with sequencing, utility service interruptions, and coordination of owner occupancy; predemolition photographs or video documenting existing conditions; and signed statement of refrigerant recovery by EPA-certified technician. A closeout inventory of removed and salvaged items is required. The contractor must conduct demolition to avoid disrupting owner operations in adjacent occupied areas, maintain existing utilities and fire-protection systems, report suspected hazardous materials other than mold (which follows Section 02 85 00 procedures), and prohibit on-site storage or sale of removed materials. A predemolition conference must address structural load limitations, material availability, protection of remaining construction, and coordination with other trades.

A. Section Includes:
1. Demolition and removal of selected portions of building or structure.
2. Demolition and removal of selected site elements.
3. Salvage of existing items to be reused or recycled.
B. Related Requirements:
1. Section 011000 Summary of Work for restrictions on use of the premises, Owner-occupancy requirements, and phasing requirements.
2. Section 017300 Execution for cutting and patching procedures.
3. Section 028500 Microbial Remediation
1.2 DEFINITIONS
A. Demo: Detach items from existing construction and dispose of them off-site unless indi-cated to be salvaged or reinstalled.
B. Remove and Reinstall: Detach items from existing construction, in a manner to prevent damage, prepare for reuse, and reinstall where indicated.
C. Existing to Remain: Leave existing items that are not to be removed and that are not oth-erwise indicated to be salvaged or reinstalled.
D. Dismantle: To remove by disassembling or detaching an item from a surface, using gentle methods and equipment to prevent damage to the item and surfaces; disposing of items unless indicated to be salvaged or reinstalled.
1.3 MATERIALS OWNERSHIP
A. Unless otherwise indicated, demolition waste becomes property of Contractor.
1.4 PREINSTALLATION MEETINGS
A. Predemolition Conference:
DENALI NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE, ALASKA
Design Alaska, Inc. 02 41 19- 2
1. Inspect and discuss condition of construction to be selectively demolished.
2. Review structural load limitations of existing structure.
3. Review and finalize selective demolition schedule and verify availability of mate-rials, demolition personnel, equipment, and facilities needed to make progress and avoid delays.
4. Review requirements of work performed by other trades that rely on substrates exposed by selective demolition operations.
5. Review areas where existing construction is to remain and requires protection.
1.5 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS
A. Engineering Survey: Submit engineering survey of condition of building.
B. Proposed Protection Measures: Submit report, including Drawings, that indicates the measures proposed for protecting individuals and property, for environmental protec-tion, for dust control and, for noise control. Indicate proposed locations and construction of barriers.
C. Schedule of Selective Demolition Activities: Indicate the following:
1. Detailed sequence of selective demolition and removal work, with starting and ending dates for each activity. Ensure Owner's on-site operations are uninter-rupted.
2. Interruption of utility services. Indicate how long utility services will be inter-rupted.
3. Coordination for shutoff, capping, and continuation of utility services.
4. Use of elevator and stairs.
5. Coordination of Owner's continuing occupancy of portions of existing building and of Owner's partial occupancy of completed Work.
D. Predemolition Photographs or Video: Show existing conditions of adjoining construction, including finish surfaces, that might be misconstrued as damage caused by salvage and demolition operations.
E. Statement of Refrigerant Recovery: Signed by refrigerant recovery technician responsible for recovering refrigerant, stating that all refrigerant that was present was recovered and that recovery was performed according to EPA regulations. Include name and address of technician and date refrigerant was recovered.

A. Inventory: Submit a list of items that have been removed and salvaged.
1.7 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Refrigerant Recovery Technician Qualifications: Certified by an EPA-approved certifica-tion program.
1.8 FIELD CONDITIONS
A. Owner will occupy portions of building immediately adjacent to selective demolition area.
Conduct selective demolition so Owner's operations will not be disrupted.
B. Conditions existing at time of inspection for bidding purpose will be maintained by Owner as far as practical.
C. Notify Architect of discrepancies between existing conditions and Drawings before pro-ceeding with selective demolition.
D. Hazardous Materials:
1. Suspect hazardous materials other than mold/microbial growth shall not be dis-turbed and shall be reported as required by the Contract Documents. Suspect mold/microbial growth encountered within areas designated for demolition or material removal shall be managed in accordance with Section 02 85 00.
E. Storage or sale of removed items or materials on-site is not permitted.
