DIVISION 22 – PLUMBING

SECTION 221116 – DOMESTIC WATER PIPING

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 WORK INCLUDES

A. Base Bid:

1. Plumbing Contractor provide:

a. Domestic water piping.

1.2 RELATED WORK

1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Regulatory Requirements: The specified requirements, in effect at date of bidding documents, are hereby incorporated by reference to the same effect as if they were included herein in full.

The requirements, or cited portions thereof, govern all piping work:

1. Illinois State Plumbing Code, 2004.

2. Underwriters Laboratory (UL):

a. UL 109: Tube fittings for flammable and combustible fluids, refrigeration service and marina use.

B. Compliance with standards and requirements of the regulatory bodies called out in the system and equipment sections herein shall be met. Materials supplied shall be the product of established manufacturers regularly engaged in the fabrication of such equipment.

1.4 REFERENCES

A. Specified Standards in effect at date of bidding documents are hereby incorporated by reference to the same extent as if they were included herein in full. The standards, or cited portions thereof, govern all work where conflicts with this document occur.

1. American National Standard Institute (ANSI):

a. ANSI B16.22 - Wrought Copper Solder Joint.

b. ANSI/AWWA - Ductile Iron Pipe Centrifugally C151/A21.5 Cast In Metal or

a. D10.9 - Standard for Qualification of Welding Procedures and Welders for Piping and Tubing.

1.5 SUBMITTAL

A. Submit in Accord with Section 01 33 00.

B. Product Data:

1. Manufacturer’s product data on piping and accessories and installation instructions.

1.6 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Provide factory-applied plastic end-caps on each length of piping; maintain end-caps through shipping, storage and handling as required to prevent pipe-end damage and eliminate dirt moisture from inside pipe and tube.

B. Where possible, store pipe and tube inside and protected from weather.

C. When necessary to store outside, elevate well above grade and enclose with durable, waterproof wrapping.

D. Protect flanges and fittings from moisture and dirt by inside storage and enclosure, or by packaging with durable, waterproof wrapping.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 WATER PIPING, BURIED WITHIN 5 FT OF BUILDING – CHOOSE ANY ONE OF THE

FOLLOWING: [Not applicable for this project.]

2.2 WATER PIPING, ABOVE GRADE

A. Copper Tubing: ASTM B88, Type L, hard drawn:

1. Fittings: ASME B16.18 cast bronze, ASME B16.22 wrought copper and bronze, or ASME B16.24 150 psi (1034kPa) flanged.

2. Joints: ASTM B32, solder, alloy Sn95, Sn94, E, HA, or HB.

3. Unions: 150 psi (1034kPa) copper, solder type socket ends.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION

A. Ream pipe and tube ends. Remove burrs.

B. Clean off scale and dirt, inside and outside, before assembly.

C. Remove welding slag or other foreign material from piping.

D. During construction, until system is fully operational, keep all openings in piping and equipment closed except when actual work is being performed on that item or system:

1. Closures: Plugs, caps, blind flanges or other similar items specifically designed and intended for this purpose.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Run pipe lines straight and true, parallel to building lines with minimum use of offsets and couplings.

B. Provide only such offsets as may be required to provide necessary headroom or clearance and to provide necessary flexibility in pipe lines.

C. Changes:

1. Changes in direction of pipe lines made only with fittings or pipe bends.

2. Changes in size made only with fittings.

3. Do not use miter fittings, face or flush bushings, or street elbows.

4. All fittings of long radius type, unless otherwise indicated.

D. Use full and double lengths of pipe wherever possible:

1. Cut pipe to exact measurement and install without springing or forcing except in case of expansion loops where cold springing is indicated.

2. Take particular care to avoid creating, even temporarily, undue loads, forces or strains on valves, equipment or building elements with piping connections or piping supports.

E. Provide non-conducting dielectric connections wherever jointing dissimilar metals.

F. Route piping in orderly manner and maintain gradient. Route parallel and perpendicular to walls.

G. Install piping to maintain headroom and neither interfere with use of space nor take more space than necessary.

H. Group piping whenever practical at common elevations.

I. Install piping to allow for expansion and contraction without stressing pipe or equipment connected.

J. Provide clearance for installation of insulation and for access to valves, air vents, drains and unions.

K. Install same type piping material specified for inside building to 5 feet (1.5m) outside of building.

L. Sizing:

1. Unless otherwise indicated, install all supply piping, including shutoff valves and strainers, to coils, pumps and other equipment at line size with reduction in size being made only at inlet to control valve or pump.

2. Install supply piping from outlet of control valve at full size connection in equipment served.

3. Install piping, check valves, strainers and shut-off valves in these equipment outlets or return lines beyond dirt pockets. Size of tapping shall be same as trap, or if no trap, size of equipment connection.

M. Make reductions in water pipes with eccentric reducing fittings installed to provide drainage and venting.

N. Branch Take-Offs:

1. Liquids: From top, bottom or side of mains or headers at either 45o or 90o from horizontal plane.

2. Use main sized saddle type branch connections or directly connecting branch lines to mains in steel piping if main is at least one (1) pipe size larger than branch for up to 6 in.

(152.4 mm) mains.

3. Do not project branch pipes inside main pipe.

4. Provide flanges or unions at all final connections to equipment, traps and valves to facilitate dismantling.

5. Arrange piping and piping connections so that equipment being served may be serviced or totally removed without disturbing piping beyond final connections and associated shutoff valves.

O. Provide access where valves and fittings are not exposed.

P. Where pipe support members are welded to structural building framing, scrape, brush clean, and apply one coat of zinc rich primer to welding.

Q. Provide support for utility meters in accordance with requirements of utility companies.

R. Install valves with stems upright or horizontal, not inverted.

S. Install water piping to ASME B31.9.

T. Pipe Drainage Provision:

1. Slope all water piping 1/8 in. per foot and arrange to drain at low points.

U. Install potable water protection devices on plumbing lines where contamination of domestic water may occur; in janitor rooms, premise isolation, flush valves, interior and exterior hose bibs.

V. Pipe relief from valves, back-flow preventers and drains to nearest floor drain.

W. Install air chambers on hot and cold water supply piping to each fixture or group of fixtures.

Fabricate same size as supply pipe and minimum 18 in. (457.2 mm) long.

3.3 JOINTS

A. Threaded:

1. Screw threads: ANSI B2.1.

2. Ream pipe ends and remove all burrs and chips formed in cutting and threading.

3. Protect plated pipe and brass valve bodies from wrench marks when making up joints.

4. Apply thread lubricant to male threads only:

a. Lubricant: suitable for steam and condensation.

b. Vent lines: Lead-free joint compound.

c. All other services: Teflon tape.

B. Solder Joints:

1. Cut copper tubing so ends are square and remove all burrs inside and outside.

2. Thoroughly clean sockets of fittings and ends of tubing to remove all oxide, dirt and grease just prior to soldering.

3. Apply non-acid type flux evenly, but sparingly, over all surfaces to be joined.

4. Heat joints uniformly to proper soldering temperature so solder will flow to all mated surfaces.

5. Wipe excess solder, leaving uniform fillet around cup of fitting.

6. Remove composition discs from solder end valves during soldering.

C. Brazed Joints:

1. Cut copper tubing so ends are square and remove all burrs inside and outside.

2. Thoroughly clean sockets of fittings and ends of tubing to remove all oxide, dirt and grease just prior to brazing.

3. Apply non-corrosive flux of type recommended by filler alloy manufacturer evenly, but sparingly, over all surfaces to be joined.

4. Heat joints uniformly to proper brazing temperatures using oxygen-acetylene torch with tip size as recommended by fitting manufacturer.

5. Wipe and brush joint clean after alloy has set.

6. Remove composition discs from solder end valves during brazing.

7. Circulate dry nitrogen through tubes being brazed to eliminate formation of copper oxide during brazing operation.

D. Insulating Dielectric Connections:

1. Comply with manufacturer's recommendations”

a. Pipe joints connecting dissimilar metals.

b. Pipe joints connecting similar metals where required for cathodically protecting pipe lines from adjoining pipe sections.

2. Joints rated to withstand temperature, pressure, and other characteristics of services for which used including testing pressure.

3. Make screwed joints with insulating unions.

4. Make flanged joints with insulating jackets, bolt sleeves and washers.

5. Bronze valve between dissimilar metals without insulating dielectric connections not considered as dielectric connection.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Before final acceptance of piping, test all systems scheduled and prove to be free of leaks”

1. Perform tests under observation of Engineer.

2. Remove, replace or satisfactorily repair defective work revealed by tests.

3. Make piping repairs with new materials; caulking of screwed joints or pin holes not permitted.

4. Contractor furnishes test equipment and materials required for tests.

5. Contractor furnishes water for testing and flushing.

6. Underground systems tested before backfilling.

7. Provide test certificates to using agency after testing is complete.

B. Testing Medium:

1. Hydrostatic Testing Medium: Clean pure water.

2. Pneumatic Testing Medium: Clean compressed air.

C. Pressure Testing Gauges:

1. ANSI B40.1, Grade AA; minimum 6 in. (152.4 mm) diameter dial with scale divisions equal or less than maximum allowable pressure drop.

D. Domestic Water System:

1. When rough-in is complete and before fixtures are set, test entire hot and cold water piping systems as scheduled, and prove tight.

2. Where portion of water piping system is concealed before completion, test that portion separately as specified for entire system.

E. Testing Requirements:

1. Hydrostatic and pneumatic tests apply to piping indicated in following schedule.

2. Raise pressure gradually to given value; then block off source.

3. Allowable Pressure Drop: Maximum amount scheduled during corresponding minimum time interval:

a. Visually examine all joints during test.

4. Install valves or caps to isolate equipment not rated for test pressure.

5. Upon successful completion and test approval, relieve piping of pressure, drain, put into normal operation except for potable water to be sterilized before placing in service.

3.5 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING

A. Cleaning:

1. Thoroughly clean all parts of installation at completion of work.

2. Remove grease, metal cuttings and sludge from equipment, pipes, valves and fittings.

3. Repair any stoppage, discoloration or other damage to finish, furnishings or parts of building due to Contractor's failure to properly clean piping system.

B. Adjusting:

1. Adjust flush valves and other parts of work for quiet operation.

2. Adjust control devices for proper operation.

3. Demonstrate to A/E satisfactory operation following adjustment.

4. Readjust or replace all items not functioning properly.

C. Disinfection:

1. Prior to starting work, verify system is complete, flushed and clean.

2. Ensure pH of water to be treated is between 7.4 and 7.6 by adding alkali (caustic soda or soda ash) or acid (hydrochloric).

3. Inject disinfectant, free chlorine in liquid, powder and tablet or gas form, throughout system to obtain a residual from 50 to 80 mg/L.

4. Bleed water from outlets to ensure distribution and test for disinfectant residual at minimum 15 percent of outlets.

5. Maintain disinfectant in system for twenty-four (24) hours.

6. If final disinfectant residual tests less than 25 mg/L, repeat treatment.

7. Flush disinfectant from system until residual equal to that of incoming water or 1.0 mg/L.

8. Take samples no sooner than twenty-four (24) hours after flushing, from 10 percent of outlets and from water entry, and analyze in accordance with AWWA C651.
