SECTION 220553 – IDENTIFICATION FOR

PLUMBING PIPING AND EQUIPMENT

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 WORK INCLUDES

A. Plumbing Subcontractor provide identification of:

1. Base Bid:

a. Plumbing equipment furnished by Plumbing Subcontractor:

1) Valves.

2) Plumbing piping.

1.2 RELATED WORK

A. Specified elsewhere:

1. 220500 – Common Work Results for Plumbing.

1.3 REFERENCES

A. ASME B13.1 (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) - Scheme for the Identification of Piping Systems.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit in accordance with Section 013300.

B. Product Data: Provide manufacturers product data for pipe markers, valve tags, HVAC duct markers, equipment name plates, and access panel marker.

C. Manufacturer's Installation Instructions: Indicate installation instructions, special procedures, and installation.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Conform to ASME A13.1 for color scheme for identification of piping systems.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

A. Seaton.

B. W.H. Brady.

C. Carlton Industries.

2.2 NAMEPLATES

A. Product Description: Laminated three-layer plastic with engraved black letters on light contrasting background color; two (2) 3/8 in. (9.5mm) mounting holes; lettering size minimum 1/2-in.

(12.7mm) high; fastened with commercial quality, rust resistant nuts and bolts with backwashers, self-tapping screws or rivets.

2.3 PIPE MARKERS

A. Color and Lettering: Conform to ASME A13.1.

B. Plastic Pipe Markers:

1. Factory fabricated, flexible, semi-rigid plastic, preformed to fit around pipe or pipe covering.

Minimum information indicating flow direction arrow and fluid being conveyed.

C. Plastic Tape Pipe Markers:

1. Flexible, vinyl film tape with pressure sensitive adhesive backing and printed markings.

D. Plastic Underground Pipe Markers:

1. Bright colored continuously printed plastic ribbon tape, minimum 6 in. (152.4 mm) wide by 4 mil thick, manufactured for direct burial service.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION

A. Degrease and clean surfaces to receive adhesive for identification materials.

B. Prepare surfaces in accordance with Section 099123 for stencil painting.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Plastic Nameplates: Install with corrosive-resistant mechanical fasteners, or adhesive.

B. Plastic Tags: Install with corrosive-resistant chain.

C. Plastic Pipe Markers: Install in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

D. Plastic Tape Pipe Markers: Install complete around pipe in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

E. Underground Plastic Pipe Markers: Install 6 to 8 in. (150 to 200 mm) below finished grade, directly above buried pipe.

F. Equipment: Identify air handling units with plastic nameplates. Small devices, such as in-line pumps, may be identified with plastic tags.

G. Controls: Identify control panels and major control components outside panels with plastic nameplates.

H. Valves: Identify valves in main and branch piping with tags.

I. Piping: Identify piping, concealed or exposed, with plastic pipe markers. Tags may be used on small diameter piping. Identify service, flow direction, and pressure. Install in clear view and align with axis of piping. Locate identification not to exceed 20 ft (6.1m) on straight runs including risers and drops, adjacent to each valve and “T”, at each side of penetration of structure or enclosure, and at each obstruction.

J. Ductwork: Identify ductwork with plastic nameplates. Identify as to air handling unit number, and area serviced. Locate identification at air handling unit, at each side of penetration of structure or enclosure, and at each obstruction.
