About this file

This specification section outlines requirements for a mechanically-assisted mobile storage shelving unit system to be installed at Langley Air Force Base. The shelving units will be used in a hazmat room and must be 88 inches high with a capacity of supporting 40 pounds per linear foot. The system will utilize wedge-lock shelving mounted on carriages riding on steel rails surface mounted to the floor. The carriages will be driven by a chain drive system providing synchronized movement. Safety features will include indicators for locked/unlocked modes and mechanical sweeps with braking systems to prevent impact. Submittal requirements, quality standards, fabrication details, finishes and warranties are also defined. The installation work will be sequenced with other construction and demonstrated to the owner upon completion.

1.5 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

1.5.1 General

The system consists of manufactured storage units mounted on manufacturer's track-guided carriages to form a compact storage system.

System design permits access to any single aisle by manually moving units until the desired aisle is opened. The carriage/rail system provides uniform carriage movement along the total length of travel, even with unbalanced loads.

1.5.2 Space Requirements by Location

1.5.2.1 Hazmat Room 130

Provide (6) 4' deep by 8' long 88" high medium duty movable storage system. Refer to architectural drawings for layout.

1.5.3 Shelving

Wedge-lock type consisting of uprights, shelves, and shelf supports, designed to be assembled without fasteners or clips. Provide shelves without any holes on exposed surfaces. Provide front and back flanges that are flush with the outside faces of posts. Provide units that are adjustable or removable along the entire height of uprights.

1.5.4 Carriage System Design and Features

The carriage system consists of a formed structural steel frame with

SECTION 10 56 26.13 Page 2 machined and balanced wheels riding on steel rails surface mounted to the floor. Select rails by the manufacturer to ensure smooth operation and self-centering of mobile storage units during travel without end play or binding. Select rail types, quantities and spacing by the manufacturer to suit installation conditions and requirements. Provide all bearings used in the drive mechanism permanently shielded and lubricated.

1.5.5 Movement Controls

Provide triple or single arm operating wheels with rotating hand knobs on the accessible (drive) ends of shelf units, centered on the end panel, located 40 inches from the base of each unit to permit units to be moved to create a single aisle opening. Turning the handle transmits power through chain drive to drive wheels on each carriage.

1.5.6 Drive System

Design the system with a positive type mechanically-assisted drive which minimizes end play, ensures there is no play in the drive handle, and that will stop carriages without drifting.

Include a chain sprocket drive system for each movable carriage to ensure that carriages move uniformly along the total length of travel, even with unbalanced loads. Select all system components to ensure a smooth, even movement along the entire carriage length. Design drive system gearing to permit 1 lb. of force applied to the drive handle to move a minimum of 4,000 lbs of load.

Provide a tensioning device on each chain drive with provision for adjusting tension without removing end panels.

Provide permanently shielded and lubricated bearings in the drive mechanism.

1.5.7 Safety Features

Color-code visual indicators to provide verification that carriages are in a locked or unlocked mode.

A single safety lock button, mounted on each operating wheel hub, will permit moving a carriage in either direction to create a new access aisle when pulled out (unlocked), or locking the carriage when pushed in.

Include a mechanical safety sweep/braking see System Accessories on this section.

1.5.8 Finishes

Fabricated Metal Components and Assemblies:

Manufacturer's standard powder coat paint finish. Color selected from manufacturer's standard colors.

End Panels, Accessible Ends:

High Pressure Laminate
