JEFF - 181202 32 14 00-7

1. Where cutting is required due to a deviation from contract drawings, review cutting with Contracting Officer prior to proceeding.

E. Joint Pattern for all stonework: As indicated on approved shop drawings.

1. Strictly adhere to pattern.

2. Review all cut conditions at edges, plant beds, and vertical surfaces.

F. Stain Protection: Immediately remove and clean off residue of mortar and soil to prevent staining of stone.

3.4 INSTALLATION TOLERANCES

A. Variation in Line: Do not exceed 1/8” in 8’-0”.

B. Variation in Joint Width: Mac 1/16"

1. Granite Pavers, Max: 1/16”.

2. Reclaimed Cobble, Max: 1/4”.

C. Variation in Surface Plane: Do not exceed 1/8” in 10’-0” from level or slope indicated.

D. Variation in plane between adjacent units (lippage):

1. Granite Pavers, Max: 1/32”

2. Reclaimed Cobble, Max: 1/8”

3.5 ACCESSIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

A. The following construction shall meet the requirements of ABAAS for Walking Surfaces and Accessible Route:

1. Mortar Set Granite Pavers at clear floor / ground space areas designated on the Drawings.

3.6 INSTALLATION – PAVERS ON SAND SETTING BED

A. For reclaimed cobble, review inventory with Contracting Officer before beginning work.

B. Place leveling course and screed to a thickness defined by the Drawings and taking care that moisture content remains constant and density is loose and uniform until pavers and cobbles are set and compacted.

C. Set pavers and cobbles to the pattern shown on the approved Shop Drawings and mockups.

D. Set pavers with a joint width as shown in the Drawings being careful not to disturb leveling base.

Use string lines to keep straight lines.

E. Vibrate pavers and cobble into leveling course with a low-amplitude plate vibrator capable of a 3500- to 5000-lb/ft compaction force at 80 to 90 Hz. Use vibrator with neoprene mat on face

JEFF - 181202 32 14 00-8

of plate or other means as needed to prevent cracking and chipping of pavers and cobble.

Perform at least three passes across paving with vibrator.

1. Compact pavers and cobble when there is sufficient surface to accommodate operation of vibrator, leaving at least 36 inches of uncompacted pavers and cobble adjacent to temporary edges.

2. Before ending each day's work, compact installed pavers and cobble except for 36-inch width of uncompacted pavers and cobble adjacent to temporary edges (laying faces).

3. As work progresses to perimeter of installation, compact installed pavers and cobble that are adjacent to permanent edges unless they are within 36 inches of laying face.

4. Before ending each day's work and when rain interrupts work, cover pavers and cobble that have not been compacted and cover setting bed on which pavers and cobble have not been placed with nonstaining plastic sheets to protect them from rain.

3.7 INSTALLATION – PAVERS ON MORTAR SETTING BED

A. Saturate concrete subbase with clean water several hours before placing setting bed. Remove surface water about one hour before placing setting bed.

B. Apply mortar-bed bond coat over surface of concrete subbase about 15 minutes before placing mortar bed. Limit area of bond coat to avoid its drying out before placing setting bed. Do not exceed 1/16-inch thickness for bond coat.

C. Apply mortar bed over bond coat; spread and screed mortar bed to uniform thickness at subgrade elevations required for accurate setting of granite curbs to finished grades indicated.

D. Mix and place only that amount of mortar bed that can be covered with pavers before initial set.

Before placing pavers, cut back, bevel edge, and remove and discard setting-bed material that has reached initial set.

E. Layout paver units before setting in mortar to avoid cutting units in any area. If cutting is required, cut units shall be not less than 1/3 full unit size in any dimension.

1. Spaced Joint Widths: See Contract Drawings.

F. Place pavers before initial set of cement occurs. Immediately before placing pavers on setting bed, apply uniform 1/16-inch thick, slurry bond coat to bed or to back of each paver unit with a flat trowel.

G. Tamp or beat pavers with a wooden block or rubber mallet to obtain full contact with setting bed and to bring finished surfaces within indicated tolerances. Set each paver in a single operation before initial set of mortar; do not return to areas already set and disturb pavers for purposes of realigning finished surfaces or adjusting joints.

3.8 PAVER EDGE RESTRAINT, INSTALLATION

A. Edging Installation: Install base of edging resting on compacted crushed stone and facing towards and under paver, drive 3/8" x 18" bright spiral steel spikes through edging holes in base of paver restraint.

JEFF - 181202 32 14 00-9

1. Install paver edge restraint in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, except substitute manufacturer’s anchorage with 18” HDG spiral steel spikes.

2. Anchor each section end with spike, 4 inches on center.

3. Accurately layout edge restraint to the lines and grades shown on the Drawings and in accordance with Section 017300.

4. Provide true curves and straights.

5. Securely connect sections together in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

3.9 JOINT TREATMENTS

A. Polymeric Sand Joint: Fully clean all paving surfaces of staining and markings.

1. Paving surface must be completely dry. Check weather reports and confirm a 0% chance of rain during installation and for 48 hours following installation.

2. Fill joints the full height of the paver with polymeric sand joint filler. Settle the joint filler and refill to the full height. The Contractor shall clean all polymeric sand from pavement surfaces so that surface is completely free of polymeric sand. Polymeric sand left to remain on the pavers can cause staining of the paver surface and shall not be accepted.

3. Mist the surface according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

4. Pavement shall be allowed to fully dry following misting.

B. Mortar Joint:

1. Prepare stone joint surfaces for pointing with grout/mortar by removing dust and mortar particles. Apply pointing grout/mortar by placing and compacting in layers not greater than 3/16 inch (5 mm) until a uniform depth is formed in the raked out joint.

2. Compact each layer thoroughly and allow to become thumbprint hard before applying next layer.

3. Tool joints of pointing grout/mortar to thumbprint hard surface condition. Use a smooth jointing tool to produce a smooth, flat face slightly below edges of stone.

3.10 MONITORING, REPAIRING, POINTING AND CLEANING

A. Examine joints at one, two, four, six and 8-week intervals after final filling and if joints are not full, repeat application until joints are full and stable.

B. Remove and replace pavers that are loose, chipped, broken, stained, or otherwise damaged or that do not match adjoining units. Provide new units to match adjoining units and install in same manner as original units, with same joint treatment and with no evidence of replacement.

C. Cleaning: Remove excess grout, mortar, dirt, stains, or other deleterious material from exposed paver surfaces; wash and scrub clean.
