About this file
This is a technical specification section for grounding and bonding work on the Stampede Penstock and Butterfly Valve Rehab project for the Washoe Project in California.
The specification establishes requirements for materials, installation, and connections for the electrical grounding and bonding system. Ground cable must be annealed bare-copper cable conforming to ASTM B 8, class B, with solid wires meeting ASTM B 3, arranged in concentric stranded configuration. Minimum cable sizes are specified as 4/0 AWG for ground risers and electrode conductors, with equipment grounding conductors sized equal to electrode conductors for major equipment or No. 4 AWG for minor equipment. Equipment ground ring bus and electrode interconnecting conductors must equal the size of the largest riser. Cable connectors must be welded, bolted solderless, or compression type with current-carrying capacity equal to the cable, manufactured from copper alloy containing no more than 4 percent zinc, and comply with IEEE 837 standards. Connectors intended for direct burial or concrete embedding must be listed for such use per UL 467. The specification requires exothermic welding processes (Cadweld, Thermoweld, or equivalent) using fresh stock molds and weld metal free of significant hazardous ingredients. Installation must comply with NFPA 70, IEEE C2, and IEEE 142 standards, with all equipment, metal conduit, steel structures, and miscellaneous metalwork connected to the grounding system. All ground connection points must have paint, enamel, scale, oil, grease, and other nonconductive material removed before installation, with damaged finishes repaired afterward. Ground connections to be direct buried or embedded in concrete must utilize exothermic processes per manufacturer instructions. All costs for grounding and bonding work shall be included in the Price Schedule.
