About this file

This is a Section 088000 Glazing specification document for the Kent Memorial Library renovation and expansion project in Kent, Connecticut, prepared for the Kent Library Association, Inc. The specification details comprehensive requirements for glazing products and installation, including clear annealed float glass, fully tempered and heat-strengthened float glass, laminated glass with polyvinyl butyral interlayers, and insulating glass units with dual-seal systems. The document requires glass products to comply with ASTM standards and performance criteria established by the International Building Code with Connecticut State Amendments, with structural performance designed by a qualified professional engineer in accordance with ASCE/SEI 7 wind pressure standards and ASTM E1300. Specific glazing schedules call for clear laminated glass at all interior glazed openings consisting of two plies of heat-strengthened float glass with 0.060-inch interlayers and safety glazing requirements, as well as low-E-coated, clear insulating glass units with argon gas interspace, pyrolytic low-E coating on the third surface, U-factors of 0.38 for fixed and 0.45 for operable windows maximum, and SHGC values of 0.38 minimum standard or 0.51 minimum for north-facing applications.

The specification mandates single-source procurement for all glass from one manufacturer and for glazing accessories from individual manufacturers for each product and installation method. Manufacturers must provide Environmental Product Declarations, Product Health Declarations, and product certificates for regional materials indicating extraction location and distance to the project site. Installation requires compliance with manufacturer written instructions for glass, sealants, gaskets, and glazing materials, with environmental limitations prohibiting installation when ambient and substrate temperatures fall below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or when glazing channel substrates are wet. The project is partially funded by Connecticut State Library funding including $2 million in State bond funds, with a mandatory pre-bid conference scheduled for November 4th at 2:00 p.m. at the library location. Manufacturer special warranties of 10 years from date of Substantial Completion are required for both laminated glass and insulating glass units, with manufacturers agreeing to replace units that deteriorate due to defects in normal use, edge separation, delamination, hermetic seal failure, or material obstruction of vision.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Examine framing, glazing channels, and stops, with Installer present, for compliance with the following:

1. Manufacturing and installation tolerances, including those for size, squareness, and offsets at corners.

2. Presence and functioning of weep systems.

3. Minimum required face and edge clearances.

4. Effective sealing between joints of glass-framing members.

B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.2 GLAZING, GENERAL

A. Comply with combined written instructions of manufacturers of glass, sealants, gaskets, and other glazing materials, unless more stringent requirements are indicated, including those in referenced glazing publications.

3.3 TAPE GLAZING

A. Position tapes on fixed stops so that, when compressed by glass, their exposed edges are flush with or protrude slightly above sightline of stops.

B. Install tapes continuously, but not necessarily in one continuous length. Do not stretch tapes to make them fit opening.

C. Place joints in tapes at corners of opening with adjoining lengths butted together, not lapped. Seal joints in tapes with compatible sealant approved by tape manufacturer.

D. Center glass lites in openings on setting blocks and press firmly against tape by inserting dense compression gaskets formed and installed to lock in place against faces of removable stops. Start gasket applications at corners and work toward centers of openings.

E. Apply cap bead of elastomeric sealant over exposed edge of tape.

3.4 GASKET GLAZING (DRY)

A. Cut compression gaskets to lengths recommended by gasket manufacturer to fit openings exactly, with allowance for stretch during installation.

B. Install gaskets so they protrude past face of glazing stops.

3.5 SEALANT GLAZING (WET)

A. Install continuous spacers, or spacers combined with cylindrical sealant backing, between glass lites and glazing stops to maintain glass face clearances and to prevent sealant from extruding into glass channel and blocking weep systems until sealants cure. Secure spacers or spacers and backings in place and in position to control depth of installed sealant relative to edge clearance for optimum sealant performance.

B. Force sealants into glazing channels to eliminate voids and to ensure complete wetting or bond of sealant to glass and channel surfaces.

C. Tool exposed surfaces of sealants to provide a substantial wash away from glass.

3.6 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

A. Remove and replace glass that is damaged during construction period.

B. Wash glass on both exposed surfaces not more than four days before date scheduled for inspections that establish date of Substantial Completion. Wash glass as recommended in writing by glass manufacturer.

3.7 LAMINATED GLASS SCHEDULE
