About this agency

The Department of the Army Space and Missile Defense Command (SMDC), a major command of the Department of Defense, is the Army's principal acquisition arm for space-based and ground-based missile defense systems, sensors, and supporting technologies. SMDC procures advanced research, development, test, and evaluation (RDT&E) work, operational prototypes, and production-level systems for integrated air and missile defense across the continental United States and worldwide overseas locations.

SMDC has awarded 4,194 federal contracts since 1992, with combined award potential value of $19.76 billion and $14.24 billion in obligated dollars. Contract activity has trended downward over the past five years: 193 awards in 2022, 136 in 2023, 147 in 2024, 100 in 2025, and 27 year-to-date in 2026. The most recent recorded award date is August 18, 2026.

The competitive landscape is highly fragmented among prime contractors over the last five years. By award count, the top five primes — Battelle Memorial Institute (26 awards), Mantech Advanced Systems International, Inc. (22 awards), Dell Federal Systems L.P (20 awards), Affigent, LLC (16 awards), and Chickasaw Strategic Pointe, LLC (16 awards) — account for only 16 percent of recent awards. By potential value, the concentration is even lower: Radiance Technologies Inc. leads with $699.7 million across 9 awards, followed by L3 Technologies, Inc. ($77.7 million, 14 awards) and Mantech Advanced Systems International, Inc. ($38.2 million, 22 awards); the top five by value cover only 4 percent of combined potential value. The agency's contracting footprint spans 892 distinct prime contractors, reflecting substantial distribution of awards across a broad vendor base.

Eighty-four percent of SMDC awards carry no set-aside designation. Small-business set-asides account for 14 percent of awards, while 8(a) awards (sole-source and competitive combined) total 42 awards or 1 percent. Service-disabled veteran-owned small business, woman-owned small business, and HUBZone set-asides together represent fewer than 10 awards across the entire portfolio.

No recent contract opportunities are recorded against SMDC or its descendant offices in the source data.
