About this file
This document is a Task Group Instruction (TGI) for cleaning, inspecting, repairing, and preserving the Oily Water Bilge Sump (9-84-2-W) on the USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC-19). The specific work involves commercial blast cleaning of the tank, visual inspection for coating and structural integrity, repairing deteriorated welds and plate sections, removing and installing new pipe hanger assemblies and sounding tube caps, and applying new preservation coatings. The work is planned to occur from January 12, 2026 through May 15, 2027, with the primary location being various spaces on the ship including the Oily Water Bilge Sump, Waste Water Bilge Sump, Fire Room, and Potable Water Tank.
Key technical requirements include commercial blast cleaning to SSPC-SP 6 standards, welding and repairing up to one linear foot of deteriorated welds, base metal weld buildup of 60 square inches, removing and replacing 10 square feet of deteriorated plate, and installing new pipe hangers and sounding tube caps. The instruction includes specific requirements for surface preparation, welding, non-destructive testing, and coating application. Special requirements note that the work affects a fire zone boundary and requires a non-flammable closure, and there is a potential lead hazard that must be addressed during the repair process.
