About this file

This document is a waterfront facilities inspection report for the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort in South Carolina, conducted by Childs Engineering on September 21, 2022. The comprehensive assessment covers multiple waterfront infrastructure components, including the Fueling Pier, Mooring Dolphins, Fuel Spill Response Storage, and associated utilities and systems. The report details the physical condition of concrete and steel structures, noting key characteristics such as construction dates, structural components, and current state of facilities like concrete piles, fender systems, catwalks, electrical infrastructure, and fuel piping.

The inspection reveals that the Fueling Pier, originally built in 1957, now primarily provides access to floating docks and mooring dolphins and supports fuel lines connecting to inshore tank farms. The Mooring Dolphins, constructed in 1993 and repaired in 2015, consist of concrete and timber structures designed to support fuel barge berthing. The report includes detailed observations of infrastructure elements, highlighting minor issues such as surface corrosion on steel components, concrete spalling, and potential impact damage to timber pile dolphins. The document serves as a technical assessment of the facility's current condition, likely supporting potential replacement or renovation planning for the fuel pier infrastructure.

Facility Usage Description:

The Waterfront Fueling Pier is a concrete pier with concrete piles and batter piles supporting it.

It is accessible via a concrete walkway from the land behind it and supports a storage building as well as a guard tower. The purpose of the pier was originally to receive fuel shipments;

however it has been replaced by the outshore dolphin structure and now only provides access to the floating docks and mooring dolphins as well as providing support for the fuel lines running from the mooring dolphins to the inshore tank farms.
