PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION

Please refer to the ECS Mid-Atlantic, LLC report titled Irrigation Supply Well Desktop Evaluation, dated

January 21, 2022, for more information about the well and other pertinent information.

3.1.1 PROTECTION OF EXISTING CONDITIONS

Maintain existing survey monuments and wells and protect them from damage from equipment and vehicular traffic. Repair any items damaged during this work. Protect wells scheduled for abandonment from damage so that abandonment may be performed according to these specifications.

3.1.2 CONTRACTOR’S RESPONSIBILITY

The Contractor shall be responsible for performing all the work in accordance with these specifications. If evidence indicates that a change to the specifications is required due to unforeseen circumstances the Contractor shall immediately notify the Government and Site Engineer of the conditions. The Contractor shall then await instructions from the Government.

3.1.3 DECONTAMINATION

Clean equipment that will be used during well abandonment activities with high-pressure hot water/steam prior to commencing well abandonment activities at the well location. 3.2.2 OBSTRUCTION REMOVAL

A. All equipment, materials, debris, and obstructions shall be removed from the well. Equipment removal shall include removal and disposal of the well’s pump, drop pipe, and wiring.

3.2.3 WELLHEAD MODIFICATION

A. Well casing shall be cut off at the surface not more than three inches from floor level.

3.2.4 WELL DISINFECTION

A. The well shall be disinfected prior to the initiation of sand and grout placement to remove bacteriological contamination that may adversely impact groundwater quality. Refer to

ANSI/AWWA C654 for disinfection procedures.

B. The chlorine solution used for disinfecting the well shall be of such volume and strength and shall be so applied that a concentration of at least 100 mg/L of available chlorine shall be obtained for the entire water depth of the well, and this solution shall remain in the well for a period of at least

12 hours.

3.2.5 SAND AND GROUT PLACEMENT

A. The well’s 8-inch diameter screen is present from 256–316 feet below ground surface bgs. The screened portion of the well shall be filled with clean sand or gravel from the base of the well to

254 feet bgs. The filler shall be no less permeable than a coarse sand and shall not extend more than three feet above the top of the screen.

weighing approximately 118 pounds per cubic foot. Upon mixing, grout shall immediately be pumped into the well without delay. Grout shall be placed from the 1–254 feet bgs interval.

C. Neat cement grout placed in one continuous operation under pressure using a tremie pipe of at least one-inch inner diameter. The tremie pipe shall be placed at the bottom of the grouted interval at the start of operations and may be advanced upward as grouting advances. The tremie pipe shall remain submerged in the slurry at all times during slurry placement. The grout slurry shall be free of lumps and have the bearing strength sufficient to prevent subsidence and support traffic or building loads.

D. Grouting shall continue until grout appears within 12 inches of the well house’s floor level.

E. The tremie pipe may not be left in place and shall be gradually removed.

F. Upon completion of grouting, the upper 12 inches below the well house’s floor level shall be filled with cement to be level with the well house floor.

G. Contractor shall record quantities of all materials used during well abandonment activities.

H. Any materials, debris, tools, or machinery waste used or generated during well abandonment activities shall be removed from the site and disposed of in accordance with local and state regulations.

3.2.6 DOCUMENTATION SUBMITTAL
