About this file
This is a specification document for door hardware required for the EHRM Infrastructure Upgrades Project at VA Medical Center – West Haven, Connecticut (Project #689-22-700, published January 1, 2021).
The specification establishes comprehensive requirements for all door hardware installation and operation, including hinges, closers, locks, latches, thresholds, and related components. All hardware must comply with ABAAS (Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Standard) and meet requirements of NFPA 80 for fire-rated doors and NFPA 101 for exit doors, with UL listing required unless heavier materials or better grades are specified. Hardware must be made to standard templates, and mortise locksets, hinges, door closers, exit devices, and floor closers must be sourced from the same manufacturer. An AHC-certified hardware consultant must prepare and submit a detailed hardware schedule with specifications including quantity, size, finish, manufacturer, key control symbols, and UL markings. Hardware submittals require six copies of schedules plus two final approved copies to the VA Medical Center Locksmith (or VISN Locksmith if unavailable), with all samples of non-previously-approved items tagged with manufacturer name, catalog number, and project number. Testing for compliance must have been conducted within four years of submittal, either in the manufacturer's plant with independent certification or in an independent laboratory.
The specification includes detailed product requirements organized by hardware type: butt hinges (three-knuckle standard, five-knuckle where unavailable) with specific sizes and materials; continuous hinges per ANSI/BHMA A156.26 Grade 1-600 with stainless steel for exterior and fire-rated applications; overhead closers per ANSI A156.4 Grade 1 with adjustable closing force and back-check; door stops per ANSI A156.16; locks and latches per ANSI A156.2 with removable core cylinders keyed into the existing Grand Master Key System; and various other components. Warranty periods are two years for automatic door operators, five years for locks and panic hardware, and ten years for door closers and continuous hinges. A preinstallation meeting must be convened at least 30 days before hardware installation, attended by the Contractor, Installer, Architect, Project Engineer, VA Locksmith, Hardware Consultant, and Hardware Manufacturer's Representative. Installation specifications establish standard hardware heights, hinge requirements by door dimensions, and fastenings using machine screws and lead expansion shields for masonry or tile surfaces. The document concludes with specific hardware sets designated HW-3A through HW-SH-13, prescribing exact components for different door types (interior single doors, rated doors, security doors, and exterior pairs) with component specifications including lock types, closers, hinges, stops, thresholds, and seals.
