About this file

This is a specification section for door hardware for the EHRM Infrastructure Upgrades Project at VA Medical Center – West Haven, Connecticut (Project #689-22-700, publication date 01-01-21). The specification covers the complete installation and operation of door hardware, including hinges, locks, closers, stops, thresholds, and related items.

All hardware must comply with the Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Standard (ABAAS) and current International Building Code (IBC) requirements. Fire-rated doors require hardware listed by UL and conforming to NFPA 80 and NFPA 101. Hardware items such as mortise locksets, hinges, surface-applied overhead door closers, exit devices, and floor closers must be sourced from the same manufacturer. Warranty periods include two years for most items, five years for locks and panic hardware, and ten years for door closers and continuous hinges. The specification references multiple ANSI/BHMA standards (A156.1 through A156.36) and other applicable publications for specific hardware requirements.

Butt hinges must conform to ANSI A156.1, with three-knuckle designs preferred. Continuous hinges must be Grade 1-600, stainless steel construction, with integral wrap-around edge guards where specified. Overhead closers must conform to ANSI A156.4 Grade 1, with adjustable closing force and back-check capabilities. Locks and latches must conform to ANSI A156.2, with mortise locks being series 1000 minimum Grade 2 and cylindrical locks series 4000 Grade I. Electromagnetic locks must be 1500-pound force and listed in BHMA's Certified Product Directory. Hardware finishes are specified as ANSI A156.18 (primarily 626 or 630), with stainless steel required for exterior and high-humidity applications. Submittals require an AHC-certified hardware consultant to prepare a hardware schedule in a specified format, six copies of the schedule, and two final approved copies for the VAMC Locksmith. A pre-installation meeting is required at least 30 days before installation, and a final inspection letter documenting re-adjustment, maintenance procedures, and problem identification must be submitted upon completion.

Contractor shall visit the site, verify location of existing hardware and submit locations to VA COR for approval.

Hardware Heights from Finished Floor:

1. Exit devices centerline of strike (where applicable) 1024 mm (40-5/16 inches).

2. Locksets and latch sets centerline of strike 1024 mm (40-5/16 inches).

3. Deadlocks centerline of strike 1219 mm (48 inches).

6. Push plates and push-pull shall be 1270 mm (50 inches) to top of plate.

7. Push-pull latch to be 1024 mm (40-5/16 inches) to centerline of strike.

8. Locate other hardware at standard commercial heights. Locate push and pull plates to prevent conflict with other hardware.

3.2 INSTALLATION
