SUBJECT Structural Narrative
Structural - 1
Existing Structure
The existing structures are as detailed in the site observation report dated 11/8/2022. Further details of the existing structure for Building 1 have been identified in existing structural drawings provided by the VA.
The primary structural interest is the floor system supporting the new server and demarcation rooms (Room 514 and 515, respectively). The floor system supporting the new server and demarcation rooms consists of a concrete rib joist and one-way slab system. The dimensions of each rib joist are 0’-4” wide by 0’-8” deep at 2’-0” on center (OC). The primary negative moment reinforcement in each rib joist is (1) #4 reinforcing bar located in the lower portion of the cross-section for the entire span length. Secondary negative moment reinforcement in each rib joist is (1) #5 reinforcing bar located in the bottom portion of the rib joist near mid-span of the rib joist. The secondary negative reinforcement is bent and transitions to positive moment reinforcement at the supporting ends of the beam. The rib joists support a 0’-2 ½” thick one-way concrete slab.

Proposed Structural Changes
The renovations and upgrades of all rooms are primarily non-structural and currently do not cause any major changes to the vertical or lateral load path. Currently, there are no new buildings being constructed to support the EHRM project.
STAND has reviewed the details of the existing structural floor system supporting the new service and demarcation rooms on Level Five of Building 1. The observations and calculations

Structural - 2 show that the slab can support a maximum service live load of 200 psf. Therefore, STAND has determined the structural floor system of Level Five in Building 1 possesses the necessary strength to support the new server and demarcation room.
As listed in sheet S001, Buildings 1,2,4 and 11 are Critical facilities and have been assigned to
Seismic Design Category (SDC) C based upon their Risk Category and the site spectral response acceleration parameters. VA Seismic Design Requirements H-18-8 requires that VA facilities assigned to SDC C are required to provide seismic bracing of non-structural components per ASCE 41 Chapter 13 for existing structures. The design of seismic bracing is to be delegated to the supplier per VA Master Construction Specifications Section 13 05 41.
Roof top units (RTU’s) are being added to the roofs. The units weigh 218 lb (use 250 lb for design). A diagram is shown on the following page (foot print is 3.34 sq ft). This is 75 psf.
Notes have been added to the structural drawings with the assumptions which need to be verified during construction.
