Please see the article from SI magazine about the process of moving the Huey into the museum. A team from Davidson Airfield, with a Huey crew, did the work.
The team took the Huey out of the freight elevator on 3, came across the center, in front of the escalators, and into the space (which is now the back exit of the POF exhibit) to the platform.
Shortest route and easiest to manipulate the helicopter.
It came down to the Museum at 4am on a flatbed pulled by a HUMMER. Then down the west entrance to the loading dock.
SI believes that the landing skids will have to be removed this time to get it out – due to the basement ceiling trays being installed and lowering the hall height clearances down to the loading dock.
The curator is still in touch with the Huey crew chief from Davidson Airfield, who oversaw the dismantling and re-assembly of the Huey in the Museum. He is retired and presently in the Philippines but may be reachable for a discussion just prior to and during the work.
Only interested bidders, please contact chanvc@si.edu to request access to photos of the installation.
