About this file
This is a Data Item Description (DID) document that establishes the format and content requirements for a Request for Variance (RFV), a federal contracting form used to document proposed departures from approved product definition information or products found to be nonconforming after production.
The RFV (DI-SESS-80640E, approved February 11, 2020) describes a proposed departure from approved product specifications for a limited time period or specified effectivity, or identifies a product that does not conform to product definition information after production. Pre-production variances and post-production nonconformances must result in a reduction in cost, indicated by enclosing the value in parentheses, except when the nonconformance is induced or caused by the Acquirer. The RFV shall be submitted using one of three formats: DD Form 1694 (Request for Variance), the Acquirer's Integrated Digital Environment (IDE) schema, or the Supplier's preferred format. All submissions must contain the complete information required by DD Form 1694 and comply with EIA-649-1 and EIA-649 standards. An electronic version of DD Form 1694 is available at https://www.esd.whs.mil/dd/. This DID supersedes the previous version DI-SESS-80640D.
