About this file
This document contains structural calculations for a federal construction project. The National Park Service is seeking proposals to correct life safety and critical deficiencies at the Oregon Caves Chateau, a National Historic Landmark. Key work includes installing a fire suppression system, upgrading egress doors and accessibility, adding a three-story elevator, replacing plumbing and electrical systems, and structural reinforcement. Steel balconies will also be added to meet fire code. The estimated price range is over $10 million. The period of performance is from April 2020 to September 2021. Interested parties should monitor the Federal Business Opportunities website for solicitation documents expected to be released on or around October 21, 2019.

BALCONY FRAMING
Structural Narrative
Condition Summary
The original structure had a timber framed balcony that was demolished. This project will restore this feature.
Rehabilitation
New Balcony will be steel framed with HSS 8x8 Moment Frame Beams and Columns.
They will be clad in non-structural cedar to simulate the former balcony’s aesthetic.
The structure is self-supporting for gravity loads and seismic loads. The gravity design considers 100 psf live load, 190 psf snow load + drift at upper level. The framing is log joist supporting decking. The log joists are supported by the HSS framing. Seismic Design considers snow load as a seismic mass. Foundations will be supported by design-build micro-piles at each HSS column location.

FIRE ESCAPES
Structural Narrative
Condition Summary
The original structure had wood-framed fire escapes from Levels 1 and 2. The existing metal-framed fire escapes have replaced the original. The existing Fire Escapes’ metal framing are to be replaced and reconfigured.
Rehabilitation
The Fire Escapes will have aluminum grating floors and 6x Alaskan Cedar cantilevered beams at 48”o.c. Dead Load, Snow Load and Ice Loading has been considered. Snow load governs over 100 psf live load. Additionally, the existing floor framing is cut and re-supported to accommodate the new 6x cantilevered beams.
The design considers the cases of full snow load on the fire escape cantilevers only and full snow load on both the roof and fire escape cantilevers.
