3.1.4 Bacteriological Disinfection of Potable Water Distribution System
Prior to disinfection, obtain Contracting Officer approval of the proposed method for disposal of waste water from disinfection procedures.
Disinfect new water piping and existing water piping affected by Contractor's operations in accordance with AWWA C651 and fill piping system with solution containing minimum of 50 parts per million of available chlorine and allow solution to stand for minimum of 24 hours.
Flush solution from the systems with domestic water until maximum residual chlorine content is within the range of 0.2 and 0.5 parts per million, or the residual chlorine content of domestic water supply. Obtain at least
SECTION 33 11 00.01 00 Page 13 two consecutive satisfactory bacteriological samples from new water piping, analyze by a certified laboratory, and submit the results prior to the new water piping being placed into service. Disinfection of systems supplying nonpotable water is not required.
3.1.5 Chlorinated Water Disposal
Neutralize chlorinated water with sodium thiosulfate following AWWA C653, Appendix A, and dispose of it by infiltration into the surrounding soil surface. Coordinate water disposal with other site work to avoid damaging work by others. Water shall not be disposed of in lakes, streams, or storm drain systems. When infiltration pits are used, the pit shall be backfilled with soil types the drawings and specifications require for the pit location.
3.2 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
3.2.1 Field Tests and Inspections
Prior to hydrostatic testing, obtain Contracting Officer approval of the proposed method for disposal of waste water from hydrostatic testing. The Contracting Officer will conduct field inspections and witness field tests specified in this section. The Contractor shall perform field tests, and provide labor, equipment, and incidentals required for testing . The Contractor shall produce evidence, when required, that any item of work has been constructed in accordance with the drawings and specifications.
3.2.2 Testing Procedure
3.2.2.1 Flushing
Prior to hydrostatic testing and disinfection, all newly installed water lines shall be open-bore flushed to remove foreign matter in accordance with AWWA C651. The minimum rate of flow shall be 2.5 feet per second.
The Contractor is responsible for notifying the Contracting Officer to schedule flushing at least 48 hours before flushing. Open-bore flushing shall be accomplished at each extremity of the water line. Under no circumstances shall open-bore flushing be done through fire hydrants or reduced outlets. Flushing shall be performed in the presence of the Contracting Officer or his representative.
3.2.2.2 Hydrostatic Testing
Test water mains and water service lines in accordance with the applicable specified standard. Where water mains and water service lines provide fire service, test in accordance with the special testing requirements given in paragraph entitled "Special Testing Requirements for Fire Service."
3.2.2.3 Hydrostatic Testing of HDPE Pipe
Fill the line slowly with water. Expel air completely from the line during filling and again before applying test pressure. Air shall be expelled by means of taps at points of highest elevation.
The test and procedure consists of two steps: The initial expansion phase and the test period. In order to accommodate the initial expansion of the pipe under test, the pipe shall be pressurized to the test pressure and allowed to stabilize (2 to 4 hours or more per manufacturer's
SECTION 33 11 00.01 00 Page 14 recommendation). After the completion of the initial expansion phase, the actual test period shall begin.
The pipe shall be repressurized to the test pressure and held for a test period of two hours. The test period must not exceed three hours. The pressure drop which occurs will not only be due to pressure expansion, but also due to fluctuations of temperature during the test. After the test period, a measured amount of make up water shall be added to return the piping system to the test pressure. The amount of make-up water shall not exceed the allowance recommended by the pipe manufacturer. This recommendation shall be submitted to the Contracting Officer prior to any water pipe being brought to the site.
NOTE: Under no circumstances shall the total time under test (stabilization period and test period) exceed eight hours at 1.5 times the pipe pressure rating. If the test is not completed due to leakage, equipment failure, or any other reason within this time period, the test section shall be permitted to “relax” for an additional 8-hour period prior to starting the next testing sequence.
3.2.2.4 Leakage Testing
For leakage test, use a hydrostatic pressure not less than the maximum working pressure of the system. Leakage test may be performed at the same time and at the same test pressure as the pressure test.
3.2.3 Special Testing Requirements for Fire Service
Flush and test water mains and water service lines providing fire service or water and fire service in accordance with NFPA 24 . The additional water added to the system must not exceed the limits given in NFPA 24
3.3 CLEANUP
Upon completion of the installation of water lines, and appurtenances, all debris and surplus materials resulting from the work shall be removed.
