Integrated into MR-3-11 period table. Visitors grab the handle and slide the graphic to reveal a nationality / the impact of the Louisiana Purchase on their life - there is no reset mechanism.

While Napoleon sold the Louisiana Territory much like people sell property today, people living in the territory had no knowledge or say in the manner. Their lives were directly affected by the decisions and actions of a select few, far away.

This interactive encourages empathy with individuals in the past.

1# Replica theodolite (early 1800s) that visitors can look through. On open display, secured with all moving parts removed or glued. Must be removable for maintenance and repair. Visitors can get a sense of what it was like for explorers during this period and the type of equipment they used. These tools were expensive and expressed the importance and skill of those who used them. Surveying the West was an important part of Jefferson's vision for yeoman farmers to settle the West. Today, surveyors use similar techniques and principles, encouraging visitors to explore and become interested in engineering and science.

Visitors do not control the speed of the turntables.

American Indians and non-Indians used bison for different things. The explosion of railroads across the West allowed for raw natural resources to be transported to manufacturing centers, such as St. Louis. Yet non-Indians only use a small percentage of the animal, leaving most of it to rot. Hide for fan belts (such as those in DC-7-04) were one such use. Indians used the whole animal.

CE-07.06-430 Eye Plate and Drift PinPI-7-05

Government-furnished eye plate and drift pin. These objects on open display helped align parts to ensure accuracy when building Eads Bridge. Secured with hybrid epoxy powder coated steel and closed cell polyethylene foam padding where needed. Visitors can see how components of Eads Bridge were constructed, and skills and engineering required. These objects also express the scale of the bridge and materials used - which were the first of their kind when built (and part of the historic designation). It is also a special treat to touch an original object, to make a more immediate connection to the past (eye plate). Eye plate to be coated for durability.
