About this file
This Task Group Instruction (TGI) details a structural repair project for the USS Blue Ridge (LCC-19), focused on repairing structural members in multiple tank and machinery spaces. The work involves removing and replacing various structural components, including tank bottom plates, horizontal stiffeners, collar plates, and backing straps, primarily located in the Distillate Fuel Marine Tank (8-48-1-F) and Clean Salt Water Ballast (9-40-1-W) areas. The materials specified are OS steel plates and beams meeting MIL-S-22698 Grade A standards, with specific dimensions and weights outlined for each component.
The project is scheduled to start on 7/21/2026 and complete by 10/21/2027, with special requirements including working around a fire zone boundary and fabricating a non-flammable closure. The instruction mandates specific technical procedures such as magnetic particle inspection of new welds, removal of temporary sealing compound, and coating of new and disturbed surfaces. Additional considerations include potential lead hazards and the need for various inspections and quality assurance measures. The work will be supported by SRF-JRMC (Ship Repair Facility) providing services like crane operations, utility services, and quality inspections.
