About this file
This is a design standards document (FAA-STD-032, dated August 1, 1996) issued by the Federal Aviation Administration establishing minimum design requirements for new National Airspace System (NAS) facilities and modifications to existing NAS facilities. The standard applies to all buildings, structures, support equipment, surrounding grounds, and site utilities for the NAS and may be adapted by FAA Washington for site-specific applications. The document is primarily for use by architects and engineers during the design phase of new facilities and modifications to existing NAS facilities.
The standard contains comprehensive technical requirements organized into seven major sections covering civil engineering (site survey, subsurface exploration, site development, utilities, vehicular and pedestrian access, and fencing); architecture (site planning, landscaping, interior spaces, construction systems, security, elevators, and obstruction marking); structural engineering (design loads, materials, seismic considerations, wind design, and calculations); mechanical engineering (HVAC systems, temperature and humidity control, plumbing, sound and vibration control, and fuel storage); electrical engineering (power distribution, lighting, communications, grounding, lightning protection, and emergency systems); life safety and fire protection; and quality assurance requirements. The standard mandates compliance with nationally recognized building codes (UBC, UFC, UMC, UPC) and various industry standards from organizations including ASHRAE, ANSI, IEEE, NFPA, and SMACNA. Economic life assumptions are provided for different facility types ranging from 15 to 30 years, with 20 years as the default. The document includes two appendices: Appendix I listing facility economic life by facility type and Appendix II specifying fire extinguisher distribution requirements for various room types and areas.
