PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.01

PREPARATION

A.

Scarify subgrade, where asphalt pavement is to be placed, to a minimum depth of 6 inches.

B.

Water and thoroughly mix subgrade until optimum moisture content is obtained when deficiency of moisture content exists. When excess of moisture exists, rework and aerate subgrade until optimum moisture content is obtained.

C.

Before final rolling, shape entire section, add additional subsoil as required, and compact to provide grades, elevation and cross‑section indicated. Ensure points of finished subgrade surface are within 1 inch of elevations indicated.

D.

Compaction: Compact soil to not less than the following percentages of maximum density for soils which exhibit a well‑defined moisture density relationship (cohesive soils) determined per ASTM D‑1557; and not less than the following percentages of relative density, determined per ASTM D‑4254, for soils which will not exhibit a well‑defined moisture‑density relationship (cohesionless soils).

Pavements: Compact top 12 inches of subgrade and each layer of backfill or fill material at [98] [95] percent maximum density for cohesive material or [98] [95] percent relative density for cohesionless material.

E.

Install underdrains per ODOT CMS Item 605.

3.02

INSTALLATION

A.

Base Course: Furnish, place, and construct [bituminous] aggregate base per [ODOT CMS Item [301] [304]] [PENNDOT Section 703].

B.

Prime Coat Application: Apply bituminous prime coat on compacted [scarified] [aggregate] base course at an application rate of 0.50 gallons per square yard of surface.

C.

Tack Coat Application: Apply tack coat, diluted with water at the ratio of one‑to‑one, at an application rate between 0.05 and 0.15 gallons for each square yard.

D.

Placement of Asphalt Pavement:

Furnish, place, and construct asphalt pavement per [ODOT CMS Items 446 and 448] [PENNDOT Section 400, Flexible Pavements].

Place asphalt intermediate (binder) course within 24 hours of priming aggregate base course. Place surface course within twelve hours of placing and compacting intermediate (binder) course.

Place asphalt pavement within 24 hours of priming aggregate base course.

Place intermediate (binder) course to compacted depth [indicated] [of _____ inches]. Place surface course to a compacted depth [indicated] [of _____ inches].

Place asphalt pavement to compacted depth [indicated on the Drawings] [of _____ inches].

Furnish, place, and construct intermediate (binder) course per [ODOT CMS Items 446 and 448] [PENNDOT Section 400, Flexible Pavements].

Furnish, place, and construct surface course per [ODOT CMS Items 446 and 448] [PENNDOT Section 400, Flexible Pavements].

6.

Ensure joints between existing and new paving are straight, clean, vertical and free of broken or loose material. Prime vertical surfaces to ensure tight bond.

E.

Seal Coat Application:

Before sealing, wire brush grease and oil spots and scrub with a detergent. Clean entire surface of foreign material and flush with water.

Prime existing surface that receives refined coal tar emulsion sealer. Lightly dampen surface with water immediately prior to application. Do not prime new asphalt.

Apply two coats of sealer a minimum of 30 days after new asphalt or asphalt repair work is completed per the Sealer Manufacturer's instructions.

Over damp pavement, apply a uniform coating of material at a rate recommended by Sealer Manufacturer.

After above application has set, apply second uniform coat at right angle to the first, at a rate recommended by the Sealant Manufacturer. Do not apply two coats in the same day.

F.

Tolerances:

Ensure surface of completed asphalt pavement is true to lines, profiles and elevations indicated, and is free from depressions exceeding 1/4 inch when measured with a 10‑foot straight‑edge.

A deviation greater than 3/8 inch will not be accepted. Measurements shall be made at three random locations with the average allowable deviation being not over 1/4 inch.

G.

Asphalt Curbs: Furnish, place and construct asphalt curbing per ODOT CMS Item 609.

H.

Guardrail: Furnish, place and construct guardrails per ODOT CMS Item 606.

3.03 Field Quality Control

A.

Provide compaction tests for each 500 square yards of prepared subgrade [and for each 250 square yards of compacted aggregate base course].

A.

The Contractor will employ and pay for soil testing and inspection service for quality control testing during earthwork operations per the General Requirements. Allow testing service to inspect and approve subgrades and fill layers before further construction work is performed.

B.

If compaction tests indicate prepared subgrade [or compacted aggregate base course] does not meet specified requirements, remove the defective work, replace and re‑test at no additional cost to the [Government] [Owner].

3.04

PROTECTION

Do not permit vehicular traffic of any kind on paving until it has cooled and hardened, and in no case less than six hours after final rolling of bituminous paving.
