SECTION 07 22 16
ROOF Board INSULATION
PART 1 – GENERAL
1.01 Related Documents
A.
Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
1.02 sUMMARY
A.
Section includes furnishing and installing of roof insulation.
B.
Related Sections:
1.
Section 06073 – Wood Treatment: Pressure‑preservative‑treated wood blocking, nailers, and grounds.
1.03
REFERENCES
A.
ASTM International:
Standard Specification for Faced Rigid Cellular Polyisocyanurate Thermal Insulation Board (ASTM C‑1289‑02).
B.
Single Ply Roofing Institute (SPRI): Standard Field Test Procedure for Determining the Withdrawal Resistance of Roofing Fasteners (SPRI FX‑1‑2001).
1.04 SYSTEM Description
A.
Design Requirements: Insulation shall resist a minimum design uplift pressure of 45 PSF multiplied by a safety factor of two.
1.05
SUBMITTALS
A.
General: Submit the following per the General Requirements.
Action Submittals:
Product Data: For the gypsum roof board and the roof board insulation, including:
a.
Facing type.
b.
R‑value(s).
c.
Approximate thicknesses.
2.
Shop Drawings: Indicate fastening patterns.
Include detailed board layout of tapered insulation indicating direction of slope; exact location of drain locations, roof penetrations, and rooftop‑mounted equipment affecting the installation of the tapered insulation.
Include profiles built up out of tapered and non‑tapered insulation indicating slope in inches per foot.
C.
Informational Submittals:
Certificates: A written statement from the Roofing Membrane Manufacturer substantiating that the proposed materials are approved and included in the Total System Warranty.
Manufacturers Instructions: For the gypsum roof board and the roof board insulation.
3.
Sustainable Design Submittals (Recycled Content): For materials and assemblies proposed under this Section that have recycled content, document the following.
The percentage of post‑consumer and pre‑consumer recycled content in the insulating core (by weight).
1.06
DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
Deliver materials in the Insulation Manufacturer's original containers, dry and undamaged, with seals and labels intact.
Labels on shipping containers and/or products shall include information on product flammability.
B.
Store materials in an environment protected from the weather – clear of ground and moisture. Protect foam insulation from direct sunlight exposure.
C.
Materials stored outside on skids will be permitted if sides of weather protection are securely tied and product is sufficiently above ground to eliminate any water damage. The Insulation Manufacturer's plastic wrap is not considered proper protection. Use tarpaulins. Prevent condensation.
D.
Reject and discard boards that exhibit separation of either facer from foam core.
1.07 Project Conditions
Environmental Requirements:
Proceed with roof insulation work only when existing and forecasted weather conditions permit work to be performed per the Roofing Membrane Manufacturer's requirements.
Do not apply roof insulation to damp or frozen deck surfaces.
Do not expose insulation material in quantities greater than can be weatherproofed during same day.
PART 2 – PRODUCTS
2.01
MANUFACTURERS
A.
Insulation Board: As supplied by the Roofing Membrane Manufacturer.
2.02 Manufactured Units
Polyisocyanurate Board Insulation: Rigid cellular thermal insulation per ASTM C‑1289, Type II, Class 1, Grade 2.
Core: Polyisocyanurate closed‑cell foam with 9‑percent recycled content (by weight).
Facers: 100 percent fiberglass mats laminated to both sides of core.
The furnishing of insulation with mat facers made out of recycled paper will be grounds for rejection of the installation.
R‑value(s) indicated on the Drawings shall be Long Term Thermal Resistance (LTTR) values per ASTM C‑1289.
4.
In varying thicknesses ranging from 1/2‑inch minimum to 4‑inches maximum.
5.
Typically tapered 1/4 inch vertical to 1 foot horizontal. Mark tapered insulation boards with board size and direction of slope.
2.03
ACCESSORIES
Insulation Joint Tape:
Asphalt treated, glass fiber‑reinforced.
Self‑adhering.
Width: Between 4 and 6 inches.
Mechanical Anchors: As recommended by the Insulation Manufacturer for type of deck.
Length of fastener shall vary with the thickness of insulation. Gauge the thickness of the decking and fill. Fasteners shall be of appropriate length to achieve a minimum of 1‑inch penetration.
The number of fasteners and layout shall:
Be as recommended by the Roofing System Manufacturer.
Satisfy specified wind uplift requirements.
Note: Provide additional fasteners along perimeters and at corners depending upon height and location of building.
PART 3 – EXECUTION
3.01
EXAMINATION
Verify that:
The insulation and gypsum roof board furnished is compatible with – and suitable for – the specified roofing system, including roofing conditions, installation procedures, and type of membrane to be used.
The building dimensions and roof drain locations agree with the reviewed Shop Drawings.
The substrate and the adjacent materials are dry, reasonably smooth, free of potentially damaging surface conditions, and ready to receive the gypsum roof board.
3.02
INSTALLATION
A.
Using approved fasteners, mechanically attach a continuous base layer of gypsum roof board directly to the roof deck to serve as a substrate for the insulation board.
C.
Lay insulation in parallel courses with end joints staggered. Lay subsequent layer(s) of insulation with joints staggered from first layer.
D.
Form tapered edge strips, crickets, saddles, and tapered areas using additional material as shown or required for proper drainage of membrane.
Exception: To avoid potential stress on the roofing assembly related to substrate movement, form required cants using pressure‑preservative‑treated wood.
E.
Install tapered insulation in multiple layers as required to meet slope requirements.
Install boards following the letters stenciled on the boards and the reviewed Shop Drawings.
Stagger joints of tapered boards with respect to underlaying boards.
Field cut crickets as required.
F.
Fasten roof insulation to substrate with mechanical anchors of type and spacing to meet requirements of specified wind uplift requirements.
G.
If the Roofing System Manufacturer requires insulation joints to be taped, then tape insulation joints per the requirements of the Roofing System Manufacturer.
H.
Do not use damaged or wet insulation board. Boards that become damaged or wet after installation shall be removed and replaced before membrane is applied.
I.
Minimum Total Insulation Thickness: As required to achieve (along with deck construction and cover board) the minimum R‑30 or per the applicable energy code of the authority having jurisdiction, which ever is greater.
J.
Using approved fasteners through the insulation board down to the roof deck, mechanically attach a continuous top layer of gypsum roof board to serve as a substrate for the specified roofing system.
3.03 Field Quality COntrol
To verify compliance with specified wind uplift requirements, perform withdrawal testing in place at the Site using the actual substrate per SPRI FX‑1, while providing ample time to alter fastener selection and layout if necessary.
