1.04 System Description
A.
Performance Requirements:
Air Leakage: Less than 0.6 CFM per square foot at 25 MPH wind pressure per ASTM D‑1677, Type I.
Water Vapor Permeance (WVP): Greater than 20 perms per ASTM E‑96, Method B.

1.09 Sequencing and Scheduling
A.
Install air barrier after sheathing is installed – but before windows are installed.
B.
Coordinate installation with the Trade that installs flashing over window openings so that air barrier from above laps in front of topmost edge of flashing.
C.
Install finish material within 120 days of installation of air barrier.
Part 2 – Products
2.01 Manufactured Units
A.
Air Barrier: Non‑woven, non‑perforated, recyclable, 100‑percent flash spun‑bonded high‑density polyethylene (HDPE) fibers bonded together by heat and pressure, without binders or fillers, into a tough, durable sheet structure.
2.02 Accessories
A.
Sealing Tape: White 3‑inch wide oriented polypropylene film coated with the Air Barrier Manufacturer's specially formulated, high‑tack, permanent acrylic adhesive. Use of duct tape will be grounds for rejection of the installation.
Fasteners: One of the following.
Rust‑resistant screws with washers.
Nails with large heads or plastic washer heads.
Part 3 – Execution
3.01 Installation
Install air barrier over insulation in exterior walls per the Air Barrier Manufacturer's instructions and the following requirements. Where requirements conflict, the most restrictive shall prevail.
Unwrap roll beginning at corner. Line up printed stud marks with first stud. Maintain roll plumb.
Secure to sheathing on vertical stud lines at between 12‑ and 18‑inches on center.
3.
Unroll directly over window openings.
4.
At vertical seams, lap edges between 6‑ and 12‑inches.
5.
Lap upper rolls over lower rolls by a minimum of 6 inches.
B.
Prior to installation of finish material, seal perimeters, seams, and penetrations through air barrier with specified tape and fasteners per the Air Barrier Manufacturer's instructions.
C.
At window openings, make a modified “I” cut in the air barrier, fold flaps into opening, and secure edges, all per the Air Barrier Manufacturer's instructions.
3.02 Protection
After installation, continuously monitor condition of air barrier.
If air barrier exhibits tears, breaks, or holes – or is otherwise compromised, allow sheathing to dry and then install patch of new material over compromised area and seal with specified tape.
Do not allow air barrier to be contaminated with chemicals that increase its wettability (for example, surfactants). Such contamination will adversely affect resistance of air barrier to bulk water. Remove contaminated material and replace with new material immediately.
Air barrier shall be air tight and free from tears – before, during, and after installation of finish material.
