Work description 1
The scope of the project consists of renovating an old building, previously used as officers club by Italian Air
Force, for a new education center. The structure of the existing building is composed by masonry brick walls, reinforced concrete beams and columns, often contained within walls, and floor slabs at various levels.
Foundations are shallow isolated under columns and shallow continuous under walls.
Works of renovation consist in strengthening existing structures dividing then into 3 parts, seismically independent, separated by seismic joints. These bodies will hereafter called with the names A, B and C.
Body A is a portion of the building located to the west which has 2 floors and roof. Body B is located to the east and includes the stairwell, 3 floors and roof (upper area), while body C is located to the southeast and includes ground floor and roof.
Works in body A will consist of:
- demolition and replacement of transverse walls with reinforced concrete (r.c.) frames;
- demolition of existing masonry wall, next to body B, and replacing it with new r.c. wall, to create a new seismic joint;
- reinforcement of all masonry walls with shotcrete and welded wire mesh;
- reinforcement and upgrading of floor slabs with reinforcement of r.c. joists from below, avoiding the demolition of flooring;
- construction of new metal safety stairs connected to the front of the building.
Works in body B will consist of:
- demolition and replacement of the stairwell masonry wall, over the entire height, with new r.c. walls, and reinforcement of existing stairwell transverse walls with a new thin r.c. wall on the internal side;
- demolition and replacement some masonry walls with new r.c. shear walls to provide resistance to seismic actions;
- reinforcement of all masonry walls with a new thin r.c. wall on the internal side in order to preserve existing external coatings;
- reinforcement of main r.c. columns between ground floor and first floor with new steel bars and reinforcement of main r.c. beams with new carbon fiber strips;
- reinforcement of all masonry walls with shotcrete and welded wire mesh;
- creation of new seismic joint to separate body B from body C, with two new r.c. frames;
- reinforcement of floor slabs r.c. joists with new carbon fiber strips, excepting parts of the roof, that have already been rebuilt.
Works in body C provide:
- creation of two new transverse masonry walls to provide resistance to seismic actions;
- reinforcement of all masonry walls with shotcrete and welded wire mesh;
- reinforcement of roof slabs with new r.c. beams inserted in the slab thickness between the existing r.c. slab ribs;
In the project state analysis, A, B and C bodies were considered independent, while in the existing state they were considered together, due to the lack of effective seismic joints.
