About this file

This radio path study document analyzes nine point-to-point radio links to support monitoring and control of water and wastewater systems at Acadia National Park in Maine. The links connect sites including the operations building, water tank, cabins pump station, campground pump station, gate house, water treatment plant, well house, and future wastewater treatment plant. The analysis models each radio path using LINKPlanner software to calculate expected received signal levels and reliability. It specifies Cambium Networks N500 radios with Yagi and omni-directional antennas to establish links in the 217-220 MHz licensed frequency band. The study provides installation details for antennas and radios at each location to ensure reliable communication meeting minimum throughput requirements between sites.

SCHOODIC NATIONAL PARK

RADIO PATH STUDY

1.1 INTRODUCTION

The Schoodic National Park includes onsite water and wastewater systems that are maintained by the Nation Park Service (NPS). New control systems are proposed that will allow the staff to monitor and control theses systems from a Supervisor Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system located at the Operations (OPS) building. A new radio system is proposed which will provide communication between the SCADA system and each of the following remote sites:

• Master RTU/SCADA at OPS Building

• Water Tank (Repeater)

• Cabins Pump Station

• Campground Pump Station

• Gate House/WW Treatment Plant (future)

• Water Treatment Plant

• Well House

The radio system will consist of Ethernet based radios (i.e Calamp Viper SC+) installed in a control panel at each location. These radios will use an FCC licensed frequency in the VHF220

(217 to 220 MHz) band with a maximum of 2 watts of transmit power. This radio frequency is dedicated to data transmission only and should not interfere with existing VHF or UHF voice radio systems.

Master RTU: A master RTU control panel (MRTU) will be located in the OPS building and consists of a PLC to poll each of the remote sites for data and transfer data to the SCADA server.

MRTU will house a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), an industrial Ethernet Switch and an

Ethernet radio. The PLC, Radio and SCADA Server will be connected to the switch using CAT6 cable. The radio requires an antenna cable routed to a surge protector in a small enclosure located outside the building and then to a yaggi antenna mounted to a 2-inch galvanized mast on the outside of the building.

Water Tank: The existing cellular modem will be replaced with a new Ethernet radio mounted in the existing Water Tank Control Panel (provided under a separate contract) and connected to a new Omni direction antenna located at the top of the tank. This radio will act as a repeater for the radio network and will be connected to the PLC in the control panel to collect the water tank level and transmit the level to the Water Treatment Plant.

Water Treatment Plant: A radio will be included in the new WTP Control Panel and connected to a surge arrestor panel outside the building and then to an antenna mounted to a 2 inch mast at the top of the building facing the water tank. An Ethernet switch in the panel will be connect to the PLC, an operator interface terminal on the front of the panel and the radio.

Cabin and Campground Pump Stations: Same as the WTP. The antenna will be mounted on

2 inch galvanized steel pole 15 feet above grade.

Well House: same as the WTP.

1.2 COMPUTER PATH ANALYSIS

A computer model was developed that calculates the Receive Signal Strength Index (RSSI) of each radio path including a prediction of availability (%). The model is used to determine reliability of radio paths and to assist in the design of the radio system at each site by changing the antenna gain, height and transmit power to obtain a reliable radio signal.

The figure above shows the radio paths. At the end of each path analysis section, the calculated

Received Power (-dBm) and the Availability (%) of the remote sites are shown. The Receive

Power is also referred to as the Received Signal Strength Index (RSSI). The Availability is a measure of the reliability of the path in % and expected down time per year.

LinkPlanner version 5.4.2 by Cambium Networks was used to model each of the radio paths. The software uses standard and accepted prediction models for calculating each radio path. The model accesses the USGS topo database for ground profiles and automatically inserts ground clutter based on Google Earth data. Ground clutter consists of trees and building that are in the radio path. The ground clutter was examined and modified for several sites based on site photos and

Google Earth satellite imagery.

1.3 COMPUTER ANALYSIS RESULTS

Table 1.3.1 below shows the proposed radio paths and calculated radio signal strengths (receive levels in -dB) and reliability (predicated Availability %) for the communication with each site based on the computer path analysis models.

A receive signal strength between -50 dBm and -85 dBm with a reliability of 99.9% or greater is considered an acceptable and reliable radio path. Currently, all sites are predicted to have reliable paths with no store and forward requirements to reach the repeater sites. Direct links between each site and the MRTU were evaluated and found to provide unacceptable paths.

dBi antenna gain in decibels (dB)when compared against an isotropic antenna pattern dBd antenna gain in decibels (dB) when compared against a reference dipole antenna. dBd = dBi -2.15 dB

RSSI Receive Signal Strength Indicator measured in -dB.

Attenuation Measured in decibels (dB), attenuation is the loss of power experienced by an RF signal as it moves from one point to another.

Transmission line attenuation is expressed in either decibels per 100 feet (dB/100 feet) or decibels per 100 meters (dB/100m) of cable length.

Line of Sight (LOS) The unobstructed space between transmitter and receiver. Longer hops must even account for the curve of the Earth as an obstruction.

Gain: Gain is the ratio of the power output to the power input of the amplifier in db.

Installation Instruction Perform the following checks during the installation (Check the deployment guide and the User Guide.)

1. Check with a GPS that you are installing at the correct location.

2. Check carefully the direction to the other end of the link. Either use a corrected compass or use the GPS waypoint feature about 300 meters from the installation location.

3. When aligning antennas, it is important to find the centre of the main beam. This is done by adjusting the antenna at each end of the link in turn and monitoring the receive level until the peak is found. Once the peak level is found, it should be checked against the prediced receive power to ensure that the antennas have not been aligned on a side lobe.

4. An hour after disarm check that the mean value for the link loss is as predicted (101.25 dB ± 17.71 dB). Also check that the received power is not greater than -51dBm.

4. An hour after disarm check that the mean value for the link loss is as predicted (105.23 dB ± 17.21 dB). Also check that the received power is not greater than -50dBm.

4. An hour after disarm check that the mean value for the link loss is as predicted (97.51 dB ± 14.73 dB). Also check that the received power is not greater than -48dBm.
