About this file

This document is a geotechnical subsurface exploration report and construction plan for a Joint Maritime Facility under Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command - Atlantic. The report presents soil boring records, stratigraphic information, and soil classification data obtained from subsurface investigation performed by AECOM-Baker in March 2024 using mud rotary drilling methods at multiple boring locations (MB-1 through MB-5).

The document includes detailed definitions of soil terms, abbreviations for soil classification testing methods, and stratigraphic symbols used in boring logs. Critical construction requirements specify that contractors must perform undercut excavation to a minimum elevation of 0.73 meters beneath specified footings along column lines 1 and 2 (from column lines A through C) and column lines A and C (between column lines 1 and 2). The undercut extent must be extended D/2 width on either side of each footing, where D represents the undercut depth. Contractors may conduct test pits to confirm the presence of tidal marsh deposits identified in boring MB-3 and may propose cost credit variances if test results indicate the layer is absent. The contractor assumes full responsibility for dewatering undercut excavations, maintaining stable excavation sides with vertical shoring or safe slopes, and backfilling with approved material meeting compaction requirements per section 31 00 00 Earthwork. Water level conditions noted in the boring records reflect site conditions at the time of exploration and do not necessarily represent groundwater levels during construction, as seasonal fluctuations are anticipated.

1. THE SOIL BORING RECORDS REPRESENT THE GEOTECHNICAL

ENGINEER'S INTERPRETATION OF THE SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS

ENCOUNTERED AT THE SPECIFIC BORING AND TEST PIT LOCATIONS

AT THE TIME OF THE FIELD EXPLORATION BASED ON VISUAL

EXAMINATION OF THE FIELD SAMPLES OBTAINED AND LABORATORY

CLASSIFICATION TESTING ON SELECTED SAMPLES.

2. LINES DESIGNATING THE INTERFACE BETWEEN VATIOS STRATA ON

THE BORING RECORDS REPRESENT THE APPROXIMATE INTERFACE

LOCATION. THE ACTUAL TRANSITION BETWEEN STRATA MAY BE

MORE GRADUAL THAN INDICATED. THE BORING RECORDS MAY NOT

NECESSARILY BE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE MATERIAL CHARACTER

AND STRATA THICKNESS OVER THE ENTIRE CONSTRUCTION AREA.

3. WATER LEVELS SHOWN ON THE BORING RECORDS REPRESENT

THE CONDITIONS ENCOUNTERED AT THE TIME OF THE FIELD

EXPLORATION AND DO NOT NECESSARILY REPRESENT

GROUNDWATER LEVELS THAT WILL BE ENCOUNTERED DURING

CONSTRUCTION. IT IT POSSIBLE THAT GROUNDWATER LEVELS WILL

FLUCTUATE DUE TO SEASONAL VARIATIONS AND OTHER FACTORS.

4. TESTING LOCATIONS AND ELEVATIONS SHALL BE CONSIDERED

APPROXIMATE.

5. BORINGS WERE ADVANCED USING MUD ROTARY DRILLING

METHODS AS NOTED.

6. BORINGS PERFORMED BY AECOM-BAKER AND REPORTED IN

AECOM-BAKER'S SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATION DATA REPORT

DATED 29 MARCH 2024 ARE SHOWN.

7. REFER TO BORING LOG LEGEND ON THIS SHET FOR AN

EXPLANATION OF THE SYMBOLS USED ON BORING RECORDS.

1. PERFORM UNDERCUT EXCAVATION TO

MINIMUM ELEVATION 0.73 m BENEATH

FOOTINGS WITHIN THE AREAS IDENTIFIED

ON THIS PLAN. THIS INCLUDES FOOTINGS

ALONG COLUMN LINES 1 AND 2 FROM

COLUMN LINES A THROUGH C AND

FOOTINGS ALONG COLUMN LINES A AND

C BETWEEN COLUMN LINES 1 AND 2.

2. FOR UNDERCUT DEPTH "D" THE

UNDERCUT EXTENTS MUST BE EXTENDED

"D/2" WIDTH TO EITHER SIDE OF THE

FOOTING, SEE UNDERCUT DETAIL.

3. THE CONTRACTOR MAY CONDUCT TEST

PITS TO THE PLANNED UNDERCUT

ELEVATION TO CONFIRM THE PRESENCE

OF THE TIDAL MARSH DEPOSIT

IDENTIFIED IN MB-3. IN THE EVENT THAT

THE TEST PITS INDICATE THIS LAYER IS

NOT PRESENT WITHIN THE FOOTING

UNDERCUT EXCAVATION LIMITS, THEN

THE CONTRACTOR MAY PROPOSE A COST

CREDIT VARIANCE TO ELIMINATE THE

UNDERCUT FROM THE PROJECT.

4. CONTRACTOR IS RESPONSIBLE FOR

DEWATERING OF UNDERCUT

EXCAVATIONS AND MAINTAINING STABLE

UNDERCUT EXCAVATION SIDES USING

VERTICAL SHORING AND/OR SAFE

SLOPES AND SAFE WORKING

CONDITIONS.
