CUTTING AND PATCHING

PART 1 – GENERAL

1.1 DESCRIPTION OF REQUIREMENTS

A. Definition: “Cutting and Patching” includes cutting into existing construction to provide for the installation or performance of other work and subsequent fitting and patching required to restore surfaces to their original condition.

1. Cutting and patching is performed for coordination of the work, to uncover work for access or inspection, to obtain samples for testing, to permit alterations to be performed for other similar purposes.

a. Areas where Cutting and Patching occurs should be inspected to determine if ACM exists. If material is determined to be ACM, inform the Owner and Architect and develop a plan to mitigate any disturbance of the ACM.

2. Cutting and patching performed during the manufacture of products, or during the initial fabrication, erection or installation processes is not considered to be “cutting and patching” under this definition. Drilling of holes to install fasteners and similar operations are also not considered to be “cutting and patching”.

3. “Demolition” and “Selective Demolition” are recognized as related-but-separate categories of work, which may or may not require cutting and patching as defined in this section; refer to “Minor Demolition for Remodeling” sections of Division 2.

B. Refer to other sections of these specifications for specific cutting and patching requirements and limitations applicable to individual units of work.

1. Unless otherwise specified, requirements of this section apply to mechanical and electrical work. Refer to Division-15 and Division-16 sections for additional requirements and limitations on cutting and patching of mechanical and electrical work.

1.2 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Requirements for Structural Work: Refer to Section 02 41 19 - Selective Demolition. Do not cut and patch structural work in a manner that would result in a reduction of load-carrying capacity or of load-deflection ratio. Prior to such work, obtain approval of project’s structural engineer.

B. Before cutting and patching the following categories of work, obtain the Contracting Officer’s approval to proceed.

1. Structural steel.

2. Miscellaneous structural metals, including lintels, equipment supports, and similar categories of work.

3. Structural concrete.

CUTTING AND PATCHING 01 04 50 - 2

4. Foundation construction.

5. Retaining walls.

6. Structural decking.

7. Roofing system.

8. Piping, ductwork, vessels and equipment.

9. Shoring, bracing, and sheeting.

10. Primary operational systems and equipment.

11. Noise and vibration control elements and systems.

12. Control, communication, conveying, and electrical wiring systems.

C. Visual Requirements: Do not cut and patch work exposed on the building’s exterior or in it’s occupied spaces in a manner that would, in the Contracting Officer’s opinion, result in lessening the building’s aesthetic qualities. Refer to the demolition drawings provided as part of the construction documents. Ask questions prior to performing cutting and patching work rather than after such performance. Do not cut and patch work in a manner that would result in substantial visual evidence of cut and patch work.

Remove and replace work judged by the Contracting Officer to be cut and patched in a visually unsatisfactory manner.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Procedural Proposal for Cutting and Patching: Where prior approval of cutting and patching is requested, submit proposed procedures for this work well in advance of the time work will be performed and request approval to proceed. Include the following information, as applicable, in the submittal:

1. Describe nature of the work and how it is to be performed, indicating why cutting and patching cannot be avoided. Describe anticipated results of the work in terms of changes to existing work, including structural, operational and visual changes as well as other significant elements.

2. List products to be used and firms including their qualifications that will perform the work.

3. Give dates when work is expected to be performed.

4. List utilities that will be disturbed or otherwise affected by work, including those that will be relocated and those that will be out of service temporarily. Indicate how long utility service will be disrupted.

5. When cutting and patching of structural work involves the addition of reinforcement, submit details and engineering calculations to show how that reinforcement is integrated with original structure to satisfy requirements.

6. Do not cut through the existing roofing system without proper approval from the Contracting Officer. Any work on the existing roof must be done in such a manner and with proper authorization as not to void the roof warranty.

7. Waste Management Plan in accordance with AMS Clause # 3.6.3-22

2.1 MATERIALS

A. General: Except as otherwise indicated, or as directed by the Contracting Officer, use materials for cutting and patching that are identical to existing materials. If identical

CUTTING AND PATCHING 01 04 50 - 3

LDG / MMAC IWTP and Collection System Upgrade (Type B) materials are not available, or cannot be used, use materials that match existing adjacent surfaces to the fullest extent possible with regard to visual effect. Use materials for cutting and patching that will result in equal-or-better performance characteristics.

1. The use of a trade name and suppliers name and address is to indicate a possible source of the product. Products of the same type from other sources shall not be excluded provided they possess like physical and functional characteristics.

2. Patch with similar or comparable systems and with approval from the warranty holders so that existing warranties are not voided.

3. Patch existing roof system with like or similar system and with the approval of the original manufacturer so that the existing roof system warranty is maintained.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 INSPECTION

A. Before cutting, examine the surfaces to be cut and patched and the conditions under which the work is to be performed. If unsafe or otherwise unsatisfactory conditions are encountered, take corrective action before proceeding with the work.

1. Before the start of cutting work, meet at the work site with all parties involved in cutting and patching, including mechanical and electrical trades. Review areas of potential interference and conflict between the various trades. Coordinate layout of the work and resolve potential conflicts before proceeding with the work.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Temporary Support: To prevent failure provide temporary support of work to be cut.

B. Protection: Protect other work during cutting and patching to prevent damage. Provide protection from adverse weather conditions of that part of the project that may be exposed during the cutting and patching operations.

1. Avoid interference with use of adjoining areas or interruption of free passage to adjoining areas.

C. Take precaution not to cut existing pipe, conduit or duct serving the building but scheduled to be relocated until provisions have been made to bypass them.

D. When machinery can damage municipal roads or parking lots to access the work site, protect the roads and lots.

3.3 PERFORMANCE

A. General: Employ skilled workmen to perform cutting and patching work. Except as otherwise indicated or as approved by the Contracting Officer, proceed with cutting and patching at the earliest feasible time and complete work without delay.

B. Cutting: Cut the work using methods that are least likely to damage work to be retained or adjoining work. Where possible review proposed procedures with the original

CUTTING AND PATCHING 01 04 50 - 4

installer; comply with original installers recommendations.

1. In general, where cutting is required use hand or small power tools designed for sawing or grinding, not hammering and chopping. Cut through concrete and masonry using a cutting machine such as a carborundum saw or core drill to insure a neat hole.

2. Cut holes and slots neatly to size required with minimum disturbance of adjacent work. To avoid marring existing finished surfaces, cut or drill from the exposed or finished side into concealed surfaces. Temporarily cover openings when not in use.

3. Comply with requirements of other applicable sections where cutting and patching requires excavating and backfilling.

4. By-pass utility services such as pipe and conduit, before cutting, where such utility services are shown or required to be removed, relocated or abandoned. Cut-off conduit and pipe in walls or partitions to be removed. After by-pass and cutting, cap, valve or plug and seal tight remaining portion of pipe and conduit to prevent entrance of moisture or other foreign matter.

C. Patching: Patch with seams which are durable and as invisible as possible. Comply with specified tolerances for the work.

1. Where feasible, inspect and test patched areas to demonstrate integrity of work.

2. Restore exposed finishes of patched areas and where necessary extend finish restoration into retained adjoining work in a manner which will eliminate evidence of patching and refinishing

3. Where removal of walls or partitions extends one finished area into another finished area, patch and repair floor and wall surfaces in the new space to provide an even surface of uniform color and appearance. If necessary to achieve uniform color and appearance, remove existing floor and wall coverings and replace with new materials.

a. Where patch occurs in a smooth painted surface, extend final paint coat over entire unbroken surface containing patch, after patched area has received prime and base coat.

4. Patch, repair or rehang existing ceiling as necessary to provide an even plane surface of uniform appearance.

5. Patch existing roof system with like or similar system to maintain positive drainage to roof drains and watertight roof membrane/

3.4 CLEANING

A. Thoroughly clean areas and spaces where work is performed or used as access to work. Remove completely paint, mortar, oils, putty and items of similar nature.

Thoroughly clean piping, conduit, and similar features before painting or other finish is applied. Restore damage pipe covering to its original condition.
