About this file
This is a product specification document for cubic yard boxes with lids to be used by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing for shipping filter press cake sludge from the wastewater pretreatment plant process.
The boxes must be multi-wall fiberboard construction with water-resistant adhesive, capable of holding 2,500 pounds of moist filter press cake sludge. Specifications include minimum double wall construction with a board combination of 90/40/90/40/90/40/90, burst strength of 100 pounds minimum, puncture resistance of 1,450 pounds minimum, and short column compression of 195 pounds minimum. Inside dimensions must be 45.25 inches long, 37.5 inches wide, and 40 inches high with 5-inch flaps on the top cover and half-slotted side corners. Boxes must fit on a standard 40-inch by 48-inch pallet with no overhang. The specification requires bottom closure to be scored and slotted or scored for erection, and boxes must be delivered in a knocked-down (flat) condition. Testing requirements mandate that when two 4-mil polyethylene liners are installed in an erected box filled with water, the box must withstand the load for three days with only slight bulging allowed.
Environmental and safety compliance certifications are required prior to delivery, including adherence to 40 CFR 720, 40 CFR 761, 40 CFR Part 268 Subpart B, SARA Title III, EPA procedures, and District of Columbia and California regulations. Shipping, marking, and labeling must conform to DOT, OSHA, HMIS, and freight classification regulations. A safety data sheet must be submitted two weeks before first delivery and upon any material changes. The boxes and lids will ultimately be used to provide secure closed storage for the sludge waste material, which will be transported to an appropriately licensed disposal facility, recycling facility, or alternate use facility.
