About this file
This is a product specification document for bentonite material required by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The specification establishes requirements for bentonite material or equivalent to Baroid Minerals and Chemicals for use as a "detackifier" in the Bureau's wastewater pretreatment plant chemical process. The bentonite prevents ink sludge from precipitating and forming non-pumpable tar-like material when treated with sulfuric acid.
The material must meet specific physical and chemical property requirements. Physical characteristics include montmorillonite content of 92%, with screen analysis requirements (80% minimum through 200 mesh dry, 1.5% typical wet), and foundry properties such as moisture content of 8-10% maximum, Fann viscosity of 21 at 600 RPM, green compression strength of 7.0 psi, and specific gravity of 2.79. Chemical composition specifications include silicon dioxide at 63.59%, aluminum oxide at 21.43%, iron oxide at 3.78%, magnesium oxide at 2.03%, sodium oxide at 2.70%, and bound water at 5.50%. The supplier must provide a safety data sheet two weeks before first delivery and upon any material changes. All material must comply with environmental and safety regulations including 40 CFR 720, 40 CFR 761 (PCB restrictions), 40 CFR Part 268, SARA Title III, EPA test methods, and District of Columbia and California environmental laws. Shipping, marking, and labeling must conform to DOT, OSHA, HMIS, and freight classification standards per 29 CFR 1910 Part 1200 and applicable motor freight rules.

(d) INTENDED USE
This material will be used in the chemical process as a "detackifier" for the ink sludge in the Bureau's Wastewater Pretreatment Plant. Without the "detackifier" added prior to the sulfuric acid, the sludge will precipitate to the bottom of the tank and form a tar like material, which is non-pumpable through the system.
