About this file
This is a technical specification document for filter aid material required by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
The specification covers technical grade precoat filter aid material with defined physical and chemical properties. Physical characteristics include maximum free moisture of 1.0%, specific gravity of 2.2-2.4, pH range of 6.5-10.0, G.E. brightness of 75-79%, off-white color, maximum particle size of 110 microns with average particle size of 8-61 microns, wet density of 9-20 lbs/cubic ft, and water solubility less than 2%. Elemental analysis requirements specify silicon content of 30-40%, aluminum 2-8%, with strict limits on iron, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, titanium, potassium, sodium, and trace elements. Suppliers must provide a safety data sheet two weeks before first delivery and upon any material changes. The material must comply with multiple environmental and safety regulations including 40 CFR 720 and 761, 40 CFR Part 268, SARA Title III, EPA solid waste test methods, District of Columbia air pollution and health regulations, and California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act. Shipping, marking, and labeling must conform to DOT, OSHA, HMIS, and Uniform Freight Classification requirements per 29 CFR 1910 Part 1200. The filter aid is intended for use as a protective coating on filter elements in the Bureau's Wiping Solution Recycling and Wastewater Pretreatment Plants to prevent solid particles from blocking filter septa.
