About this file
This document is a Nellis Air Force Base (AFB) Suitable Tree List, detailing a comprehensive inventory of tree species appropriate for the base's unique environmental conditions. The list, last updated in March 2022, provides a detailed rating system for trees based on climate resiliency factors including environmental tolerances, water efficiency, drought tolerance, and pathogen resistance. Trees are evaluated on a 5-star scale (1★ least appropriate to 5★ most appropriate) and include detailed metrics such as tree size, type, growth rate, water needs, litter production, and suitability for specific uses like parking lot, street, or buffer trees.
The document includes 15 tree species native to or suitable for the Nellis AFB region, with notable entries like Mulga Acacia (5★ rating), Mazari Palm, and Texas/Silver Mountain Laurel. Each tree is comprehensively profiled with attributes such as average height (10-45 feet), coverage area, tree type (deciduous/evergreen), and additional comments noting factors like recommended organic mulch, potential invasiveness, or environmental tolerances. The list was developed in collaboration with the Southern Nevada Water Authority and Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition, specifically tailored to support the Nellis Natural Resources Program's requirements for resilient, low-maintenance landscaping.
