SECTION 02230
CLEARING AND GRUBBING
1. Part 1 - GENERAL
1.01 summary
A. This section specifies clearing, grubbing, removing, and disposing of all vegetation and debris within the clearing limits except objects designated to remain. The Forest Service will be responsible for removing all trees within the clearing limits. Contractor will be responsible for removing stumps.
B. Clearing Limits.
1. Clearing limits are within 10 feet of the building limits (unless otherwise shown on the Drawings or staked on the ground).

3.01 surface preparation
A. Clearing.
1. Clear all brush and other objects not designated to remain.
2. Clear brush, and shrubs within clearing limits subject to irreparable damage by construction operations. Remove all stumps completely that will be under concrete slabs. Grind all others within 12 inches of the ground surface.
B. Grubbing.
1. Grub all stumps, brush, and roots (to a minimum 3” diameter) within the clearing limits.
2. Grub stumps, shrubs, brush, and roots (to a minimum 3” diameter) within the excavation limits.
3.02 Tree Removal and Preservation
A. Falling of Trees.
1. Fall trees toward the center of the area to be cleared
2. Use controlled falling to prevent injury or defacement to structures, other trees, or property.
B. Treatment of Trees Shrubs Damaged by Contractor.
1. Trim branches flush with tree.
2. Within 3 days of the damage, treat all cut or scarred surfaces of trees or shrubs designated to remain. Use a product prepared especially for tree surgery.
C. Tree and Snag Removal Outside Clearing Limits.
1. Clear all snags and unstable trees which are marked for removal outside the clearing limits.
3.03 Debris Disposal
A. Timber greater than 6 inches in diameter shall be cut into 18 inch lengths and stacked at the edge of the clearing limits or stacked at locations shown on the Drawings. Other vegetative debris may be disposed of on-site or chipped and spread evenly in areas adjacent to the clearing limits in depths no greater than 3 inches.
B. The COR will designate the location for disposal within ½-mile of the site.
C. Dispose of non-vegetative debris off National Forest Lands.
3.04 Clearing for buildings
A. Minimize disruption of existing landscape.
B. Remove all rubbish, vegetative material, and debris from the construction areas.
C. Trees and other vegetative material, within the grading limit lines, to be saved, will be marked by the Government and protected by the Contractor.
D. Do not remove any trees or other vegetative material outside the grading limit lines without approval of the COR.
4. PART 4 - MEASUREMENT AND PAYMENT
4.01 MEASUREMENT
This work shall be measured as a lump sum.
4.02 PAYMENT
This work shall be under the following pay item as follows:
