About this file
This document is Amendment No. 1 to Request for Proposal (RFP) No. 438477 for the design and fabrication of HSR BPM Button Assemblies for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) project. The amendment incorporates clarification questions and answers, extends the proposal due date to August 16, 2024, and specifies that the conical shape of the button design is required, but an alternative shape can be proposed if the cost difference is provided. The RFP is issued by the Department of Energy Office of Science and seeks up to three subcontractors to provide 35 preproduction components each, with an option for up to 1,355 production components. The RFP requires a leak rate of 2x10-10 cc He/sec and a button surface made of solid copper or copper-plated. The agency will exercise an option on one of the subcontracts for the production components.

Attachment A
Clarification Questions and Answers
Dated July 19, 2024
1. Per Note 10 of drawing (Attachment D), exact dimensions of the conductor and housing bore is our option, as long as we form a 50 Ohm impedance line.
Question: Can we use existing design which is not a conical shape?
Answer: The conical shape behind the button face was developed to meet the requirements for this application. An alternative button shape behind the button face can be proposed, BNL would then need to do simulations to check if this is acceptable. If an alternative button shape is proposed, provide a mechanical drawing, and the cost difference between the BNL conical design and the alternative proposed design.
2. Your Requested leak rate is 2e-10 CC He/sec.
Question: Can this be reduced to 1e-8 ccHE/Sec which is industry standard rate?
Answer: 1e-8 leak checking is for HV applications not UHV. Our standard for UHV applications is 2x10-10.
3. 300 C bake temperature is too high for compression glass seal.
Question: Will it be possible for you to bake at 200 C for longer time?
Answer: Yes, 200C is ok.
4. Button surface on your drawing is copper plated.
Question: Can the plating be removed? Our standard BPM designs we currently have and been supplied to many labs are not plated.
Answer: A copper surface (or highly conductive metal) is required on the surfaces of the button to reduce the temperature increase of the button which is installed inside a cryostat operating at ~4 Kelvin. As the hadron beam passes close by the button, an induced current passed through the button face, if the button face surface (skin effect) material has an elevated resistance, elevated power will be deposited into the button, causing undesired temperature increase. The button can be solid copper, or copper plated. Solid copper is preferred. This button design needs to achieve performance requirements that are not typical for most standard BPM buttons.
