| 1. Per VA estimated Construction Schedule included in the RFP, the duration for installation and completion of activity ‘Install Communications System’ seem to be short (ex; Bldg 1, Level 1) which shows duration of ‘Communications Install’ at 10 days only. If this pertains to the whole ground floor (Bldg 1, Level 1), this is definitely not enough considering installation of new conduits and cabling for all the rooms. Please confirm if this is for the TR rooms only and not for the whole floor (Ref. Sheet B01-TN101A). The duration of 10 days will not be enough for the whole floor. Please advise and adjust schedule to include installation of conduits, and comms wiring for each floor rooms. Note that this will increase construction duration in consideration of adding durations for installation of data/comms to each room per floor and buildings. |
Contractor shall provide the final schedule. VA schedule is an estimate.

5/TN-601 calls out for us to provide a 1-1/4” conduit and 4” square by 2-1/8” deep box with single gang plastic ring.
a. Does the current/existing conduit and box meet this detail?
b. Is this detail for all drop locations? This detail is not identified at any of the new locations.
i. If a new hard pipe is required in all these locations this will increase the drywall patch/paint and ICRA cost for the project. Also increasing the duration contractors will be on site. We would need every room to be unoccupied during the duration of work. Does the VA want to treat the existing drops as unforeseen site conditions?
c. Is surface mounting of 1-1/4” conduit and box acceptable?
d. Confirm J-hooks are acceptable once the conduit is stubbed up above accessible ceilings.
e. Is flexible conduit acceptable as in-wall raceway(s) for security/electrical/data?
a. Existing rough-ins are likely not all 1 1/4" conduits but that should generally not affect the project. Bidders shall assume existing data device rough-ins can accommodate the new cabling indicated. Contingency shall be carried per solicitation question #63 to cover the minimal locations where an existing rough-in does not have capacity. Contingency use for data devices will be tracked during construction.
b. The detail provided would only be required for new data device rough-ins that are specifically indicated with reference to the detail. Where no reference is provided, the existing rough-in will be reused. The majority of data device rough-ins will be reused for this project.
c. From an appearance standpoint, surface mounting conduit and boxes is not desired. The actual number of new rough-ins across the project is minimal. The preference is to plan for cutting in devices and patching back during the bid phase. New devices on masonry walls shall utilize comparable plug mold assembly to allow for a more aesthetic surface appearance. Further review of each new location can be performed during construction to determine if means and methods can be altered.
d. J-hooks are acceptable once above the ceiling. The VA would like to reuse existing cable tray where it exists, but jhooks are an approved solution for this project.
e. Flexible conduit is an acceptable solution in the cases indicated as long as installations are compliant with NEC requirements. Note article 517 has special requirements for patient care areas.
Refer to specification section 260533 – Raceway and Boxes for Electrical Systems and specification section 270533 – Raceways and Boxes for Communcations Systems.
