About this file
This document is a technical specification section (02 82 11) for Traditional Asbestos Abatement at the Grand Junction VA Medical Center. The project involves removing approximately 240 square feet of asbestos-containing drywall and joint compound between rooms 109 and 114 in Building 8. The specification provides comprehensive guidelines for asbestos removal, including detailed requirements for worker safety, containment procedures, personal protective equipment, decontamination facilities, air monitoring, and waste disposal.
Key technical requirements include establishing a regulated work area with negative air pressure, using specialized decontamination units, implementing strict worker protection protocols, utilizing wet removal techniques, and conducting thorough visual and air clearance testing. The contractor must follow extensive federal and state regulations, including OSHA, EPA, and DOT requirements. The abatement process involves multiple stages including pre-abatement preparations, careful ACM removal using amended water, lockdown encapsulation, waste packaging and disposal, and final area decontamination with aggressive air sampling to ensure fiber levels are below 0.01 f/cc. Contractors must submit detailed documentation, including qualifications, safety plans, and personnel certifications prior to beginning work.
