About this file
The provided document is an amendment to a federal contract opportunity for the maintenance dredging of Fire Island Inlet and Shores Westerly to Jones Inlet, New York. The amendment includes composite grain size distribution curves and grain size scales for sand sediments documentation. The overall federal contract opportunity is for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to perform maintenance dredging of the Fire Island Inlet Federal Navigation channel and deposition basin, with subsequent placement of the dredged sand as nourishment along the designated feeder beach at Gilgo Beach, Suffolk County, New York. The proposed dredging and beach nourishment work would involve dredging and placement of approximately 700,000 to 1,000,000 cubic yards of sand, with the project scheduled to be dredged to a depth of 14 feet plus 2 feet allowable over-depth. The purpose is to alleviate shoaling and maintain the project dimensions, providing safe and economical use of the waterway. The work is estimated to cost between $15,000,000 and $50,000,000, with plans and specifications available in March 2024, bid opening in April 2024, and contract award in May 2024.

Note:
The cores were sampled at distinct lithologic layers rather than a regular interval.
Table 2 shows the sediment distribution characteristics sampled.
The layer represented by each sample is shown by depth below grade in feet of the Layer Start and Layer End columns, For example, Core VC98 38, Layer 2 is 5 feet thick, and represents the sediment starting 5 feet below the surface and ending at 10 feet below the surface.
