About this file
The document provided is a technical specification for Composite Grain Size Distribution Curves and Grain Size Scales for Sand Sediments, which includes details on core samples taken from the Fire Island Inlet and Shores Westerly to Jones Inlet, New York area. The technical specification outlines the layer thicknesses, depths, mean diameters, and standard deviations of the sediment samples collected.
The related federal contract opportunity is for the Maintenance Dredging of Fire Island Inlet and Shores Westerly to Jones Inlet Beach Erosion Control and Navigation Project. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposes to perform maintenance dredging of the Fire Island Inlet Federal Navigation channel and deposition basin, with subsequent placement of the dredged sand as nourishment along the Gilgo Beach shoreline. The project is estimated to cost between $15,000,000 and $50,000,000, with plans and specifications available in March 2024 and a bid opening in April 2024. The government intends to award the contract in May 2024, with a notice to proceed issued in the first week of October 2024. Liquidated damages of $2,390 per calendar day of delay will be assessed until the work is completed.

Note:
The cores were sampled at distinct lithologic layers rather than a regular interval.
Table 2 shows the sediment distribution characteristics sampled.
The layer represented by each sample is shown by depth below grade in feet of the Layer Start and Layer End columns, For example, Core VC98 38, Layer 2 is 5 feet thick, and represents the sediment starting 5 feet below the surface and ending at 10 feet below the surface.
