SECTION 03 36 00 Page 3

(1) DO NOT BURNISH FLOOR SLAB.

3.1.3.1 Defects

a. Areas of the floor slab that have finishing or post finishing imperfections such as pits, valleys, low spots, gouges, concrete spatter, or slobbers that result in elevation profile changes greater than 0.050 inches when measured under with a 12 inch straightedge will require an additional grinding procedure.

b. The associated cost of this grinding shall be the responsibility of the Contractor.

c. The following will not be acceptable:

(1) Concrete remnants from previous placements.

(2) Foreign and deleterious substances from unclean tools, equipment or miscellaneous objects dropped into concrete/terrazzo while it is being placed.

(3) Localized imprints from boots, foreign objects dropped into concrete or damage to slab sustained during and after curing.

3.2 SURFACE PREPARATION

3.2.1 Cleaning Equipment

3.2.1.1 Floor Scrubbers

Walk behind scrubber with squeegee and soft brush.

3.2.1.2 Brushes

Use one of the following as appropriate:

a. Nylon softens when wet, so it is used for gentle scrubbing, mopping or polishing of decorative floors. Will not scratch tile, terrazzo, or coated surfaces.

b. Bassine Natural fiber which is a traditional material used for gentle scrubbing of tile, terrazzo or marble.

c. Union Mix Combination of Bassine and another natural fiber called Tampico. Most gentle brush fill for light scrubbing or buffing of decorative floors.

a. Trisodium Phosphate.

b. Tennant Super Soilage Degreaser.

c. Other approved degreaser.

3.2.2 Pre-Polishing Cleaning

a. Remove curing, sealing and coating agents, oil, breaking compound

SECTION 03 36 00 Page 4 residue, wax and grease by scraping off heavy deposits mechanically or chemically to assure penetration of product into surface.

b. Remove mildew by scrubbing with solution of trisodium phosphate and bleach. Rinse with clean water.

c. Remove dust and loose material by brushing, sweeping, vacuuming, and blowing with high pressure air.

d. Remove paint residue with solvent/stripper provided the stripper does not have an acidic pH.

e. Power rinse entire floor surface to thoroughly rinse and remove all soap residue or contaminants. Squeegee dry.

3.3 FLOOR SURFACE POLISHING

Polishing Contractor is to perform the following services and apply the following products:

a. Diamond grinding in accordance with the specifications listed below.

(1) 80 grit metal bond diamond to initially smooth and open up concrete to accept hardener.

(2) Install architectural saw cut pattern as per Architectural drawings for concrete floors.

(3) Use Soff Cut ProEdge Beveled Blades or other architectural reveal as required by Architect.

(8) Architectural reveals define boundaries of Concrete Dye.

(9) Owner to approve color of dye during mock-up phase.

(10) 400 grit resin bonded diamond - to prepare floor for polishing.

(11) Reapplication of Concrete Dye for concrete floors as required to provide optimal coloring.

(12) 800 grit resin bonded diamond to finish surface. Provide 800 grit resin bonded diamond finish prior to CMU walls being laid above finish floor elevation. Upon completion of the 800 grit, provide a sealer that will be compatible to the 800 and 1500 grit resin bonded diamond finish that will occur within two months of substantial completion.

3.4 CLEANING AND PROTECTION

a. Polished concrete floors are the finish that will be exposed at the completion of construction, these surfaces shall be protected and cleaned between polishing phases while subsequent construction occurs and after completion of polishing until acceptance by the Owner.

b. Cover polished surfaces with craft paper, color-fast polypropylene carpet flipped up-side-down or floor protection products such as EZ-Cover and EZ-Cover Max from McTech.

c. To protect areas subjected to masonry wall construction, overhead sprinkler, plumbing and other overhead work that might subject the slab to dropped materials or tools, place 1/4 inch hardboard or 1/2 inch thick plywood over carpet cushion, EZ-Cover of EZ-Cover Max floor protection. Remove 1/4 inch hardboard or 1/2 inch plywood immediately following overhead work to permit concrete drying. No pipe cutting or other work involving cutting oils shall be permitted on architectural slab surface.

d. Concrete floor gouges and spalls shall be repaired as follows:

(1) The repair area shall be carefully squared up. Slightly oversize and re-define the perimeter of the repair with a small dust free concrete saw to a depth of 3/4 inch. Carefully remove the area of concrete within the limits of the saw cut boundary to a depth not less than 3/4 inch using a small impact hammer, chisel or other acceptable percussion instrument. Provide International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) Concrete Surface Profile (CSP) of at least

5. Use a wire brush, wire wheel on a drill, compressed air or vacuum to remove all surface laitenance and other materials that might affect bond. Use painters tape or other appropriate slab protection material adjacent to the repair boundary to protect the architectural surface from staining. Apply bonding compound such as Degussa Concresive Liquid LPL Long Pot Life Bonding Adhesive or Euclid 452 High Modulus Epoxy to the roughened concrete surface and vertical faces of the repair area. Secure small samples of cement, sand, aggregate and liquid color (if required) from ready mix supplier. Blend coarse and fine aggregates in proportions utilized by ready mix supplier, then screen 1/2 inch and larger particles from the blend of sand and coarse aggregate. Combine appropriate proportion of cement to remaining sand and aggregate.

Incorporate appropriate dosage of water to sample to create a workable paste. Incorporate liquid color (if required) and mix thoroughly. Repair materials should be overfilled, tamped and troweled leaving a slight elevated profile at the surface. The area should be kept wet for a minimum of three days and covered with a cure cover. After a minimum of 72-HRS, the grind and polish to match surrounding area.

e. Special emphasis shall be on ingress, egress and main foot traffic/working areas.

f. When removed for cleaning, place carpet pad after floor has dried.

SECTION 03 36 00 Page 6

g. Spills shall be cleaned up immediately.

h. Splatters of mortar, paint or similar construction materials shall be immediately cleaned-up.

i. Spilled liquids shall be immediately cleaned-up. Clean at least once every evening after Work in the area of polished floors are done for the workday.

(1) No chemicals, detergents or other products may be added to machine; only potable water is to be used water in the scrubber shall be continuously changed. Dirty water from scrubber left on polished surfaces will etch finished surface.

3.5 JOINT SEALANTS

Joint sealants shall be a 2-part polyurethane traffic grade. Protect concrete surfaces adjacent to joints and tool flat. See section 07900 for sealants.
