SECTION 02 32 13.12

EXPLORATORY PILE DRIVING

PART 1 GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

This section describes the requirements for exploratory pile driving.

1.2 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS AND SEQUENCE OF WORK

1.2.1 Purpose

The purpose of exploratory pile driving is to facilitate accurate ordering of king piles and sheet piles to correct lengths for the various features of this project. Exploratory driving will also aid the assessment of the acceptability of Contractor-proposed equipment and procedures, and to determine the tip elevations coinciding with the seating of piling into rock.

1.2.2 Methodology

Exploratory pile driving shall be accomplished by driving a pair of adjacent sheet piles using a vibratory hammer (down to the point of vibratory refusal). The elevation at which vibratory refusal and impact driving refusal are encountered shall be recorded for each pile. The elevation at which vibratory refusal is encountered will be defined as the top of rock. Exploratory pile driving shall be done using the appropriate impact hammer types for the different pile types (i.e. the same ones to be used in production pile driving). The Exploratory Pile Driving procedure shall utilize a fabricated template to act as a guide for the piles and to provide stability during driving. The king pile shall be driven, and the two pairs of sheets shall be threaded to the king pile and driven in accordance with the procedures outlined under the planned normal driving procedures for production piling. A more complete description of the exploratory pile driving requirements and sequence is provided under Part

3, EXECUTION.

1.2.3 Location of Exploratory Piles

Exploratory piles shall be driven at the locations, as shown on contract drawings Nos. 037-LCH-18/4, 5 and 6. Piles shall be located within 10 feet (any direction) of the locations identified on the drawing. The actual locations of all exploratory pile locations shall be recorded by the Contractor, along with the elevations of the pile tip and the inferred top of rock, the driving time, obstructions encountered and other pertinent notes regarding driving conditions and other information contained on the sample "Pile Driving Record" attached to the end of Section 31 41 16 METAL

SHEET PILING.

1.2.4 Sequence of Work, Exploratory Pile Driving

Exploratory piles, as shown on the drawings, shall be driven from floating plant. Exploratory pile driving shall be conducted in conjunction with

SECTION 02 32 13.12 Page 2 exploratory drilling (see Section 02 32 13.11 EXPLORATORY PILE DRIVING) as the first order of work. Piles shall be driven using equipment and procedures as planned for production piling, and in an order approved by the Contracting Officer. All records of the exploratory pile driving shall be delivered to the Contracting Officer no later than 5 calendar days following the completion of the exploratory driving. The Contractor shall not make final orders for pile material until the exploratory piles have been completed and a profile of the top of rock has been established. The Contractor assumes all risk for materials which are ordered prior to the establishment of the FINAL top of rock elevations, and shall reorder/replace any materials so ordered which are inadequate based on the FINAL elevations. All costs for such reordering/replacement of materials incorrectly ordered shall be at the Contractor's expense, at no cost to the Government. Quantities for materials for the piles and necessary equipment, for bidding purposes, shall be based on the dimensions and elevations indicated on the contract drawings.

1.2.5 Government Access for Inspection

The Contractor will provide access for the Government for inspection of the exploratory pile driving operations at all times. The Government will access Contractor floating plant by boat. The Contractor shall maintain a mooring location on the floating plant for mooring of the Government's inspection boat, and shall permit free access to Government inspectors to the floating plant. No separate payment will be made for providing such access to these operations.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

Government approval is required for submittals with a "G" designation;

submittals not having a "G" designation are for information only. When used, a designation following the "G" designation identifies the office that will review the submittal for the Government. Submit the following in accordance with Section 01 33 00 SUBMITTAL PROCEDURES:

SD-01 Preconstruction Submittals

Pile Driving Equipment; G, RE

Complete descriptions of piling driving equipment including hammers, both impact and vibratory; extractors; protection caps, and other installation appurtenances to include a drawing of the template that will be used shall be submitted for approval prior to commencement of work.

Exploratory Pile Driving Plan; G, RE

Prior to starting work, the Contractor shall submit a plan for exploratory pile driving. The plan shall include, but not be limited to, the proposed method of driving exploratory piles including a description of the equipment and tools that will be used, a listing of any subcontractors to include a description of how the subcontractors will be used, and a description of all methods and procedures that will be utilized to ensure a safe operation and to protect the environment. The plan shall also include a schedule of exploratory piles and the estimated tip elevation at each location, as inferred by the Contractor from available subsurface information for the site. This submittal shall also include a statement of the prior experience, in the

SECTION 02 32 13.12 Page 3 type of work described in these specifications, of the person or persons designated to perform the work specified herein. No work shall be performed until this plan has been approved and no deviation from the approved plan will be permitted without prior approval by the Contracting Officer.

SD-06 Test Reports

Pile Driving Logs; G, RE

The Contractor shall submit complete, three legible copies of PILE DRIVING LOG, an example of which is shown at the end of this section, to the Contracting Officer no later than 5 days following completion of each exploratory pile. The Pile Driving Logs shall include the elevation at which vibratory refusal has been reached and the final tip elevation at which driving refusal has been reached.

SD-11 Closeout Submittals

Pile Driving Records

Records of the pile driving operations shall be submitted within 5 calendar days following completion of each exploratory pile.

These records shall provide a system of identification which shows the disposition of approved piling in the work, driving equipment performance data, piling penetration rate data, and piling dimensions. The Contractor shall utilize the sample "Pile Driving Record" attached to the end of Section 31 41 16 METAL SHEET PILING.

1.4 GOVERNMENT EXPLORATORY PILE DRIVING

The Government can provide pile driving As-Built data for the upstream and downstream sheet pile cut-off walls and cofferboxes that were installed under Contract One (River Wall construction), as requested

1.5 CONTRACTOR QUALITY CONTROL, EXPLORATORY PILE DRIVING

Contractor Quality Control for exploratory driving shall be in accordance with Section 01 45 01 USACE QUALITY CONTROL. The Contractor shall provide a qualified pile driving foreman and work crew, and a supplemental CQC staff member for exploratory pile driving. The supplemental staff member or other assigned personnel shall be responsible for the preparation of a separate log for exploratory pile driving. The staff for exploratory pile driving shall also include a Professional Land Surveyor to sight exploratory pile locations and record final hole locations. The presence of any Government representative or the keeping of separate pile driving records by the Contracting Officer shall not relieve the Contractor of the responsibility for recording logs for the exploratory piles.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 EXPLORATORY TEST PILES

The Contractor shall furnish sheet piles for the exploratory pile driving program. The types of piles for each location shall consist of two PZ-35, two PS27.5 or two PS31 sheets as detailed on teh drawings.
