About this file
This Task Group Instruction (TGI) details an inspection, repair, and preservation task for the No. One Gas Turbine Module (GTM) intake on the USS Dewey (DDG-105). The work will be performed in multiple engine room locations, including port and starboard dirty and clean sides, involving a total of 5,620 square feet of interior surface areas. Key tasks include visual inspections, commercial blast cleaning, ultrasonic thickness measurements, and structural repairs such as base metal weld buildup (244 square inches), replacing deck/overhead/bulkhead sections (110 square feet), and repairing stiffeners and welds.
The document specifies special requirements, including potential asbestos hazards and hot work in magazine and adjacent spaces. The work requires fabricating a non-flammable closure for fire zone boundary modifications. Materials to be used include perforated stainless steel sheets, acoustic and thermal insulation, and adhesives. The instruction notes that removal and installation of certain interferences and gas-free operations will be covered in future documentation. The work is to be performed by SRF-JRMC (Shore Repair Facility), with various support services including crane rigging, utility services, and quality assurance inspections.
