About this file
This Task Group Instruction (TGI) details an inspection, repair, and preservation project for the Ships Service Gas Turbine Generator (SSGTG) No. 3 Exhaust Trunk on the USS Dewey (DDG-105). The comprehensive work scope includes visual inspections of the exhaust trunk, secondary air inlet trunk, and associated passages, requiring power tool cleaning to bare metal across 373 square feet, ultrasonic thickness measurements at up to 100 locations, and extensive repair work. Specific repair requirements include base metal weld build-up (160 square inches), plate replacement (94 square feet), stiffener replacement (75 linear feet), and weld repairs (25 linear feet).
The instruction highlights special requirements, including work on a fire zone boundary necessitating a non-flammable closure, and involves multiple operational units including Code 231A (planner), Code 333 (Work Integration Manager), and SRF-JRMC (Ship Repair Facility). Material requirements include specialized gaskets, washers, and ferrules made of wire-reinforced fiberglass, all specified as non-asbestos. The project is identified by Job Order 38K4212387 with Key Operation A01, and involves detailed inspection, structural assessment, and preservation of critical ship infrastructure.
