About this file
This document appears to be a trip report from Siemens providing step-by-step instructions for modifying an Ansaldo NOAA SPDM (Ship Propulsion Drive Module) to meet specific requirements. The key modifications include:
- Installing firmware version CEFAS 0.3 to enable constant current and constant KW regeneration.
- Modifying the C.T. feedback to allow two drives to be used in a 12-pulse configuration.
- Adding a Profibus card for communication with the drive PLC and an Infan card for master-slave control of rectifiers.
- Recalculating and replacing the burden resistors to achieve a 220% IOC threshold.
The document also includes detailed instructions for disassembling the drive, making the modifications, and reassembling it. Appendices provide additional technical details on the IOC threshold adjustment and connector locations. This appears to be supporting documentation for the NOAA Ship Henry Bigelow FY25 Dockside Repairs contract opportunity, which is a special notice solicitation for NOAA Region 1 IDIQ contract holders.

3. What a NOAA generic drive needs.
2.1. Taking a drive apart
Step 1. Remove the drive from the box. Remove the wooden frount cover via the 6 black pins.
Step 2. Remove the protective plasic cover from the bottom of drive.
Step 3. remove profibus card and infan card.
A Profibus.
B Infan Card.
Step 4. Remove L shaped bracket and ribbon cable.
Step 5. Remove C-card by unscrewing board spacer or nut in each corner. Take care when removing the two ribbon cables on the lower right of the card.

Step 6. Remove P-card by removing the two upper board spacers and the two lower nuts.
• Disconnect the C.T feedback connector (A).
• Disconnect ribbon cable (B) from card.
• Disconnect cables for 12 pulse configuration from terminal block. (C)
• Disconnect CN1,2,3 and 4. note that CN3 and CN4 have to pass through the card.(D)
• Disconnect control power connector. (E)

• Remove snubber card. (A)
• Remove Copper work (B)
• Remove C.T’s and note position (C) All that is then left are the SCR’s.

3. What a NOAA generic drive needs.
The drive as standard from Ansaldo will not perform the required functions in the propulsion drive system. The basic drive consists of a C card and a P card with the drive hardware. Severial extras are needed;
1 firmware, the current firmware is CEFAS 0.3. this firmware is different to CEFAS 0.2 in that it allows constant current and constant KW regeneration.
2 C.T feedback modification that allows two drives to use the same feedback effectively combining them as a 12 pulse. This is sometimes refered to as Walters mod.
3 A profibus card, for communications with the drive PLC.
4 An infan card, for master slave control of rectifires 2 and 4. the Alpha angle is transmitted from the maser 1,3 to the slave 2,4.
5 The Burden resisters are not a standared value that can be found in the manule. They have been recalculated so that the IOC is now 220%. The resister to be used are 120 ohm ½ W and 15 ohm 1 W.
Configuring the drive.
1. Strip back the drive to step 6 section 2.
2. Solder the C.T burden resisters, 120 ohm and 15 ohm in place of resisters R176 and R177. see apenxex 1.
3. Solder resisters as per drawing S407.1 rev1. The towers can be seen on apendex
1. This modification may have been installed before shipping from Ansaldo.
4. replace the P-card, reconnecting all cables. Take care when reconnecting cables as applying to much pressure can damage adjacent SMD’s.
5. Change C-card jumpers as per the drive location, if this is not known leave in default setting. Attach note to drive with description.
6. Change Firmware EPROM, red star. This chip is located next to the parameter
EPROM, green star, seen in step 5 RHS picture. the current revision of firmware is CEFAS 0.3. The EPROM’s are subject to ESD damage.
7. replace C-card. Take care when reconnecting cables as applying to much pressure can damage adjacent SMD’s.
8. connect ribbon cable as per section 2 step 5 LHS picture. take care to ensure that it does not pass over the board spacer otherwise when the L-shaped bracket is fitted the cable will be pinched. See step 3.
9. Remember that depending which location in the drive the rectifier is placed the C- Card may required different jumper setting. See apendex 3.
10. Fit Proifibus connector to top left of L-Shaped bracket. Connect ribbon cable. See Apendex 2
11. Fit Infan cable to bottom right of L-shape cable. Connect ribbon cable.
12. replace front cover.
4. Apendex.

IOC THRESHOLD
In normal conditions, the averaged voltage drop across the burden resistors is 2V @ converter’s rated current.
The IOC threshold is fixed to about 6.38V (319%).
There are three possibilities to reduce the ratio between the IOC level and the converter (or motor) nominal rating.
1) Substitute R35 and/or R108. They are the (SMD) resistors used to obtain the 6.38V for IOC level. The substitution requires a lot of practice and makes the “P” board out of standard. (in figure below there is a piece of drawing in which the burden resistors and IOC comparator are shown).
2) Calculate the burden resistors to give 6.38V of voltage drop @ 160% of motor nominal rating. In other words, the voltage drop is 3.99V at motor nominal rating.
Substitute the link between turrets X6 and X7 with a resistor (R1, few kiloOhms) and mount a new resistor (R2) between X7 and X13. These two resistors form a voltage divider that must give 2V (average) at the motor nominal rating. For example: R1=R2=1Kohm.
3) Calculate the burden resistors to give 3V @ motor nominal rating. Set parameter DJ8=150% (the maximum value permissible). In this way the ratio between IOC level and the motor current is reduced to 6.38/3 = 2.13 (213%).
DJ8 is parameter used to divide the sampled voltage across the burden resistors (see figure below).
