About this file

This document is a comprehensive specification for traditional asbestos abatement at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center, involving renovation of Buildings 10 and 136 for the Audiology department. The project requires removing multiple types of asbestos-containing materials (ACM), including white magnesia pipe insulation debris, aircell pipe insulation, layered cardboard pipe insulation, and white tank insulation, totaling approximately 320 linear feet and 25 square feet of materials.

The specification provides detailed requirements for contractor qualifications, safety procedures, worker protection, containment setup, removal methods, and disposal protocols. Key specifications include establishing regulated work areas with negative air pressure systems, using wet removal techniques, double-bagging contaminated materials, and conducting rigorous visual and air clearance testing. The project demands strict compliance with OSHA, EPA, and VA regulations, requiring specialized training, medical surveillance, and personal protective equipment for all workers. Final clearance requires airborne fiber levels to be reduced to or below 0.01 fibers per cubic centimeter, with comprehensive documentation and testing procedures to be followed throughout the abatement process.
