About this file
This document is an Amendment (0004) to Solicitation 36C25025B0019 for renovating the Audiology area at the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek, Michigan. The amendment extends the bid opening date to May 20, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. ET and provides clarifications and updates to the solicitation through a series of 21 Requests for Information (RFIs) covering detailed aspects of the renovation project, including specifications for doors, glazing, heat exchangers, workstations, ceiling components, and various room finishes.
Key technical clarifications include updating specification sections for sliding doors (STC ratings), confirming contractor responsibilities for countertops and equipment installation, specifying base materials and finishes, and providing guidance on equipment like audiometers, trash cans, and mirrors. The amendment includes several attached documents such as floor plans, equipment plans, mechanical details, and specification sections for hollow metal doors, sliding door assemblies, and canopy coverings, which provide additional technical context for potential bidders on this VA healthcare facility renovation project.

THE FOLLOWING ANSWERS TO REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION QUESTIONS ARE HEREBY PROVIDED TO CLARIFY, UPDATE, REVISE, OR CORRECT CONTRACT SPECIFICATIONS AND/OR DRAWINGS.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
RFI Question 1: Building section symbols are shown to illustrate the corridor and rooms on each side of the corridor which reference drawing 10-AE301. Will this drawing be issued under a forthcoming amendment as it does not appear in the drawing set or in the sheet index?
Answer 1: Drawing is included, but out of order. It appears at the top of the architecture drawing index section.
RFI Question 2: Ref drawing 10-AE101…Who is responsible to provide and install countertop shown in the interview call room 102? Can cross section and elevation details be provided for all cabinets and countertops in room 102, 120, 110 and 118 which show materials and finishes required?
Answer 2: The contractor is responsible for providing the countertop. Cabinets are specified in 12 32 00 with applicable construction references and standards noted.
RFI Question 3: Will specifications be provided for the canopy structure and roof system?
Answer 3: Specification 10 73 26 has been added and works in coordination with 05 12 00, Structural, and Architectural drawings to describe requirements of canopy.
RFI Question 4: Please confirm that the only STC doors needed on the project are the sliding exam room doors (openings 101, 102A, 102B, 107A, 108B, 112, 113, 114, 115, 119, 120, 121C and 121D). Please also confirm what STC rating is needed. Specification 08 34 00 notes STC 35 & STC 40.
Answer 4: Spec Section 08 34 00 has been updated to reflect control room doors meet STC 50 and exam rooms doors should meet STC 40. Architecture floor plans have been updated to reflect gyp walls for control rooms should meet STC 55 and walls between exam rooms should meet STC 50.
RFI Question 5: Will the glass/glazing for the wood doors be furnished and installed by the aluminum, glass and glazing contractor?
Answer 5: Determined by contractor.
RFI Question 6: With the housekeeping pads will this allow for condensate to flow to the receiver with gravity from the heat exchangers with modulation control valves.
Answer 6: If referring to the steam to heating hot water heat exchanger, there should be no issue as the condensate for those units are coming off at about 3 feet and can be raised higher if need be. If referring to the domestic hot water heat exchanger, there should still be enough clearance to route condensate to the condensate pump. The connection point for the condensate pump is 16 inches for a 6-inch pad. The condensate for the heat exchanger comes off the unit close to 26 inches off the floor. If the condensate is piped back at 1/4" per foot, there should be no problem with the gravity flow back to the condensate pump.
RFI Question 7: I intend to bid AD Systems sliding doors for the exam room doors. Please let me know if this is acceptable. Hardware set 3G notes AD Systems, but specification 08 34 00 only notes Serenity Sliding Door Systems.
Answer 7: Spec Section 08 34 00 has been updated to more clearly reflect that Basis of Design or a product meeting the requirements will be considered.
RFI Question 8: Hollow Metal Specification 08 11 13 mentions stainless steel frames and lead lined frames. I don’t believe these are needed for this project. I intend to bid cold-rolled steel frames at interior locations and galvanized frames at exterior locations (both without lead-lining). Please let me know if this is acceptable.
Answer 8: This is acceptable from AE's perspective.
RFI Question 9: The project specifications include section 08 71 13 – Automatic Door Operators. However, the hardware sets do not include any automatic door operators. Please confirm no automatic door operators are needed for this project.
Answer 9: No auto door operators are included in this project.
RFI Question 10: Drawing 136-AE01 shows workstations 1-8 on the floor plan, but these areas were not included on the room finish schedule, please advise.
Answer 10: Workstation finish coordination is based on selected system furniture and Battle Creek VA Interior design input. The floor finish for the workstation is CPT2. Paint color for gyp wall construction bounding workstations will be determined by VA interior design.
RFI Question 11: Drawing 10-AWQ731’s equipment schedule identifies ‘workstation type 4’ as VA provided, contractor installed. Will installation include assembly? If so, will assembly information be given on the workstations? Also, does installation include power/data requirements (if applicable) will further information be given on that?
Answer 11: Workstation Type 4 is VV - VA Provide and VA Install not VC RFI Question 12: The reflective ceiling plan provided on 10-AE141 does not include speakers, nurse call, or wireless hot spots. If any of this equipment currently exists, will the contractor be responsible for re-installing it? If so, will the locations be given?
Answer 12: Full ceiling removal on the first floor of Building 10 is shown in Architectural demolition including associated ceiling mounted items. Speakers, nurse call, and wireless access point locations are shown in electrical drawings.
RFI Question 13: Detail 17 on drawing 10-AE111 shows the staff breakroom elevation. This cannot be found on the ‘finish legend – basis of design’ will the basis of design be provided for the casework/solid surface?
Answer 13: Casework laminate and countertop basis of design shown on “Finish Legend -Basis of Design” RFI Question 14: The architectural drawings do not indicate what areas get VB #1 (6” base) versus VB #2 (4” base), please advise.
Answer 14: Locations of VB1 and VB2 are shown on “Room Finish Schedule on sheet 10-AF701”.
RFI Question 15: Drawing 10-AWQ701 shows a walk off mat being installed in the vestibule (room 100). Will the basis of design be provided?
Answer 15: BOD: Spacelinks - DesignPro System. Prepare slab underneath as if exposed concrete finish. Transitions from adjacent floors should not exceed 1/4" vertical transition or 1/2" vertical transition with bevel (meeting ABAAS 303.2&3).
RFI Question 16: Drawing 136-AE01 shows Room 102E getting SRF for the flooring. Will the basis of design be provided?
Answer 16: TR 102E is not in scope of this project. Flooring material is shown as reference for potential floor transition provided by this contract.
RFI Question 17: Drawing 10-AE112 shows a 10” x 18” mirror in the restroom accessory schedule. 10” wide is not a standard size and does not seem to match detail 4 on the same drawing. Please advise.
Answer 17: Equipment drawing was updated to remove JSN and specify a 24"x36" mirror. Further specification is located in 10 28 00, which has not been updated.
RFI Question 18: The drawings require that the GC provide and install the Audiometer. I believe that would mean 4 since there are 4 audio booths. There is no specification or manufacture name or model to track down a cost.
Answer 18: JSN M0030 is provided as a performance specification RFI Question 19: For Building 10 there are no millwork details or manufacture name or models for any and all millwork. – BC-1, BC-2, CAB 1, UC 1 and others. Where are the details for this work?
Answer 19: The contractor is responsible for providing the countertop. Cabinets are specified in 12 32 00 with applicable construction references and standards noted.
RFI Question 20: Trash Cans are to be provided by the GC. There is no specification; manufacturer or model number.
Answer 20: JSN F2010 is provided as performance specification.
RFI Question 21: Building 136 Room TR. The room finish nomenclature as shown on the Room Finish Schedule can not be found on the Finish Legend – Bases of Design – See Drawing 136-AE101.
Answer 21: Not in scope of this project. Flooring material is shown as reference for potential floor transition provided by this contract.
