A&E 15021.00 MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS HOTEL REHABILITATION – PHASE 1
MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, WYOMING
INTERIOR WOOD CLEANING 06350-1
SECTION 060310 - INTERIOR WOOD CLEANING
PART 1 – GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. The Work of this Section includes thorough surface cleaning to remove dust, dirt and debris, including drips and spills, to all existing interior wood surfaces in preparation for Historic Wood Repair & Restoration and/or Staining and Transparent Finishing.
B. Work includes cleaning concealed wall and ceiling spaces, opened / accessed during the progress of work specified, prior to installation of work specified and reinstallation / installation of wood finishes that conceal spaces.
C. Related Requirements:
1. Section 060312 “Historic Wood Repair & Restoration” for additional information and requirements concerning existing wood components repair and restoration processes.
2. Section 080314 “Historic Treatment of Wood Doors” for additional information and requirements related to wood doors and trims.
3. Section 080352 “Historic Treatment of Wood Windows” for additional information and requirements related to wood windows and trims.
4. Section 099300 “Staining and Transparent Finishing” for requirements regarding wood finishing.
1.2 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. Restoration Cleaning Specialist:
1. Interior wood surface cleaning work shall be performed by a Professional Cleaning Firm with not less than five (5) proven years of successful experience cleaning surfaces equivalent to those identified in this Project.
2. The Restoration Cleaning Specialist shall employ personnel equally experienced and skilled in cleaning methods specified for execution of the Work.
1.3 SUBMITTALS
A. Qualifications: For the Restoration Cleaning Specialist.
B. Mockups: Prepare mockups of wood cleaning processes to demonstrate aesthetic effects and to set quality standard for materials and executions. Prepare mockups so they are as inconspicuous as practicable and demonstrate the full range of existing conditions to be cleaned. Mockup size and location shall be agreed to in writing by Contracting Officer prior to execution.
1. Provide two (2) field test samples at each of the locations listed below.
2. Coordinate with field conditions to demonstrate cleaning process, materials, methods and conditions.
3. Obtain written approval from the Contracting Officer of test samples, procedures, chemicals, cleaners and equipment, and compliance with this Specification Section prior to proceeding with the Work.
4. Continue to revise mockups until acceptance has been granted by the Contracting Officer to proceed with the work.

C. The experienced Restoration Cleaning Specialist shall, with the Contracting Officer, modify interior wood cleaning procedures, processed materials and methods based mockups and tested conditions. Demonstrate:
1. Steam cleaning stain removal from wood surfaces.
2. Steam cleaning built-up dirt removal from wood surfaces.
3. Removal of trapped dust, dirt, and debris from wood surfaces.
4. Micro-brush vacuuming of confined areas and surfaces.
5. Dust containment.
D. Product Data: Manufacturer’s written product data compliance with specified products and appliances including vacuum cleaners and accessories and steam cleaner and accessories.
E. Compliance: Additional information required to show compliance with products, equipment and appliances specified herein and required to perform the work specified.
1.4 PROJECT CONDITIONS
A. Clean each surface or unit to a condition expected in a normal commercial building cleaning and maintenance program.
B. All existing wood surfaces shall be cleaned as specified herein. Clean existing wood surfaces prior starting historic wood repair and restoration and/or transparent finishing processes.
D. During the process of construction activities, clean and remove dust, dirt, and debris from concealed spaces opened to access areas for work indicated in the same manner as specified here-in. Remove dust, dirt, and debris from all concealed spaces prior to enclosing work.
D. Clean all wood surfaces including, but not limited to all exposed surfaces of wood wall and ceiling surfaces, , detailed wood components, wood doors and windows, standing and running trims, and window and door casings.
1. Clean wood surfaces not directly exposed to view.
E. Cleaning methods vary for each surface. Take extreme care to protect surfaces from damage. Clean exposed surface finishes to a dust free condition free of stains and foreign substances.
F. PRESCRIBED METHODS FOR CLEANING SHALL BE MODIFIED BY THE RESTORATION CLEANING
SPECIALIST AND CONTRACTING OFFICER, BASED ON RESULTS FROM TEST SAMPLES AND
SUBMITTALS.
1.5 SEQUENCE
A. Coordinate cleaning operations with ongoing Work. Schedule cleaning operations such that cleaned surfaces are no longer subject to dust and debris settling back on cleaned surfaces from any other Work to be performed.
B. At a minimum, sequence cleaning work as follows:
1. Complete construction and restoration work.
2. Prepare and clean spaces to be concealed by installation of finish work.
3. Complete installation of new work, including wood floor surfaces.

4. Complete sanding and finish to wood floors.
5. Complete re-installation of doors and restoration of door frames and trims.
6. Complete restoration and reinstallation of window sashes.
7. Complete restoration and reinstallation of new wood surfaces and finishes.
8. Begin wood cleaning operations.
9. Immediately follow with Transparent Finishing.
10. Install carpets, drapery, cabinetry, doors, and door and window hardware and accessories.
1.6 PRE-INSTALLATION CONFERENCE
A. Conduct Pre-Installation Conference at the Project site.
PART 2 – PRODUCTS
2.1 MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS
A. Use Miele certified HEPA sealed vacuum cleaners, with a minimum of 1100 watt power and two (2) fan suction motor system 141 CF airflow, 100-inch column waterlift and near zero emission or written approved equal.
1. Vacuum attachments include:
d. Stiff bristle dusting brush.
e. Crevice tool, micro brush, and micro cleaning tool set.
c. Flexible wand that enables access to confined spaces.
B. Use portable Vapor Jet, Vaporjet 2400, or approved equal, vapor steam cleaner suitable for commercial use application. With a minimum 296 degree internal boiler temperature, 66 psi maximum working pressure, and 1500 watt heating power or written approved equal.
1. Vapor steam cleaning attachments include:
a. Window cleaning tool.
b. Various nylon brushes and optional brushes.
f. Extension wands.
g. Toweling cloths.
h. Manufacturer’s standard spot cleaner.
i. Tuff brush kits.
2.2 METHODS
A. Cleaning methods include, but are not limited to the following:
1. Use the mildest and gentlest cleaning method possible.
2. Abrasive cleaners are not necessary, nor are they allowed.
3. Vapor steam clean spills, drips, and caked on dirt deposits.
4. Use HEPA vacuum with brush attachments to remove dust and debris from wood surfaces.
5. Vapor steam cleaning of stained wall and ceiling surfaces.
6. Do not use cleaning materials or methods that alter, change or damage the surface of existing historic materials.
B. Contain and collect dust and debris during operations, do not allow dust to accumulate on cleaned

surfaces.
PART 3 – EXECUTION
3.1 INSPECTION
A. The Restoration Cleaning Specialist must examine the areas and conditions to be cleaned and notify the Contractor in writing of conditions detrimental to the proper and timely completion of the Work. Do not proceed with the Work until airborne dust and debris related activities are complete and conditions have been corrected in a manner acceptable to the Restoration Cleaning Specialist.
3.2 SURFACE PREPARATION
A. Perform cleaning procedures in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions for substrate condition(s) indicated or if not indicated, as installed in the field. Coordinate questionable preparation conditions with the Contracting Office at the Pre-installation Conference.
B. Perform all necessary patching, repair, and replacement of materials and surfaces.
C. The Contractor shall repair, at no additional expense, any and all damages caused by execution of the Work.
3.3 APPLICATION
A. Vacuum all concealed areas and existing and new finish surfaces using certified HEPA sealed vacuum and brush attachments specified. Use these attachments to reach and vacuum confined areas or difficult to clean surfaces.
1. Remove dust and debris with vacuum or, when required, by hand with a stiff natural fiber bristle brush.
2. Spot clean localized drips, spills, and attached debris.
3. Steam clean surfaces exhibiting heavy soiling and staining.
B. Spot clean localized drips, spots, and trapped debris, from wood surfaces as approved by the Contracting
Officer during the demonstration process requested in Paragraph 1.3 above. Spray area with warm water applied with hand sprayer. Brush dampened surface with a natural fiber bristle brush to remove soiling, repeat as necessary.
C. Steam clean wood surfaces exhibiting heavy soiling typically evident on handrails, newel posts, wood doors, door frames, trim and casing, and surfaces surrounding light switches and other locations as testing indicates.
D. Clean window glass and mirrors using vapor steam cleaning and commercially available glass cleaner and manufacturer’s recommended clean rags.
E. Wipe painted and polished surfaces with damp clean cloth steam clean as required.
3.4 CLEAN-UP AND PROTECTION
A. During the progress of the Work, remove from the site all discarded materials, rubbish cans, and rags at

the end of each workday.
B. Protect Work of other trades against damage and/or accumulation of dust, dirt and debris. Correct any damage by cleaning, repairing, or replacing, and refinishing as acceptable to the Contracting Officer.
C. During progress of Work, remove temporary protective wrappings provided by others for protection of their
Work.
D. Remove labels, tape, staples, nails, mastic, etc., that are not intended to remain.
E. Immediately follow cleaning work with Linseed Oil Preservation Treatment.
