2.1 External Hull Zones for SSN-688 Class Submarines (Project Provide)
General Radiological Requirements for Nuclear Powered Submarines at
Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY); accomplish
General Statement on Radiation: This is a nuclear powered submarine.
The radiation levels in accessible areas, where the Contractor is to work, are lower than the radiation exposure levels allowed by the Federal Government for members of the general public as set forth in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 10, Part 20, "Standard for Protection Against Radiation" (10 CFR 20).
Training of Contractor Personnel: The Contractor shall ensure that all personnel assigned to work on this vessel are familiar with the following information, prior to boarding the vessel. A list of trained personnel shall be kept by the Contractor for 3 years.
Obey posted, verbal and written radiological control instructions.
Radiation areas are identified by 2.1. Specific radiation area boundaries are to be established by NNSY Code 105 via a sketch provided with Task
Order. No Contractor work will be performed inside posted radiation areas.
Do not enter ANY AREA, or SPACE posted with ANY SIGN that has a magenta (purple) colored three bladed radiation symbol on a yellow background.

SUPERVISOR. List is due prior to commencement of work aboard the vessel.

personnel will or might be exposed to radiation, radioactive contamination or radioactive material. Yellow and magenta ribbons are also used to identify such areas. DO NOT ENTER these areas. Extending any part of the body over or under this boundary is a violation.
Personnel outside these boundaries do not receive radiation exposure above levels stated in 3.1 due to nuclear propulsion plants, contamination or radioactive material.
Yellow bands or tools, yellow plastic or herculite bags or wrappings, or yellow anti-contamination clothing, if encountered (unattended) shall not be touched. Stay away and keep others away from any material identified as radioactive material or contamination. Send someone to the ship's quarterdeck to report the incident.
When performing hot work or any other potentially damaging evolution in spaces with Nuclear Piping and Components, this equipment will be protected from damage by NNSY. The Contractor shall not install any protective covers on NUCLEAR COGNIZANT equipment. NNSY will initiate DL/DRs as required to have NUCLEAR equipment protected as a Risk Mitigation Action Item.
