About this file

This document is an inventory and description of wastewater and irrigation systems for Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella in Sicily, Italy, associated with a Base Operations Support (BOS) Services solicitation. The detailed inventory covers two primary sites (NAS I and NAS II) and includes comprehensive information on wastewater treatment infrastructure, lift stations, tools, and irrigation systems. Key system components include pre-treatment facilities, equalization tanks, biological and membrane bioreactor (MBR) plants, disinfection systems, and multiple pump stations with specific manufacturer details, model numbers, and maintenance requirements.

The inventory provides granular documentation of each site's technical specifications, including the number of pumps, electrical panels, level sensors, and calibration frequencies. For wastewater treatment, both NAS I and NAS II have similar system architectures featuring inlet channels, equalization tanks, biological treatment processes, UV disinfection, and dry beds. Irrigation systems are also documented, with details on tank locations, flow meters, motorized valves, and zone-specific irrigation areas. The document emphasizes the importance of regular maintenance, calibration, and compliance with environmental regulations for all system components.

Wastewater - System Description

WASTEWATER SYSTEMS DECSRIPTION
Collection System Description:
NAVFAC’s Sanitary Sewer Systems collect wastewater from buildings to either the centralized wastewater treatment plant on the installations or to the municipal wastewater treatment facility. The system contains laterals that connect buildings to a main sewer pipeline. The sewer system is a conveying system that includes pump stations, force mains, manholes, storage facilities and other components. Most of the systems are designed to take advantage of gravity flow; however, in areas lacking adequate depths, pump or lift stations move wastewater into a new pipe section (force main) to continue the transfer. The collection piping systems may include combinations of differing materials and sizes.
Wastewater Teatment Plant (WWTP) Description:
The NAS Sigonella wastewater treatment plants are composed as follows:

• Pre-treatment

• Equalization

• Biological plant + MBR plant

• Disinfection The wastewater produced by the activities carried out within the base is pre-treated with the removal of big and fine solids by means of existing pre-treatment. The wastewater are collected into equalization tank and mixed by two submersible mixers. From the equalization basin, three submersible pumps transfer the mixed wastewater to the biological treatment. The biological process takes place in the bioreactor tank and into membrane tank for the degradation of pollutants. The treated effluent is finally disinfected and discharged.
